W A Wann, Detnooratio oandi date for buperintendent ol Publlo Instruction at the June elootion in - Oregon, was born in Meigs County, East Tennessee' in 1870. Hii parent! moved to Oregon in 1875, locating on a farm in Polk County. There he attended the publio sohools, continuing hii studies at home after working hours oa the farm until he had finished the High Sohool work. In 1887 he entered the Willamette University t Salem where be continued hi tudlea lor two years. Was oom pelled to give up the oourse on ao oouut of a severe attaok of soarlet fever whloh left him In very poor health. Two years hard work on the farm and in the grain ware house at Ballston, Folk County, completely restored his health. In 1890 he entered the Mon mouth Normal Sohool as assistant teacher, and during the first year look the professional work, passed the state examination and reoelved his degree with the olass of 1891 Binoe mat ume he has been a regu lar teaoher in the Normal Sohool. He has been in charge of the rooords as secretary of the laoulty sinoe 1894. Last June he asked for and obtained leave of absenoe to take some work in the State University and in one ot the Cali fornia universities. In the position of seoretary ol the Monmouth sohool Mr Wann has had opportunity to learn tbe grade of work done by the ditierent schools in Oregon and to buourae so dissatisfied with the results of the "CRAMMINO 8BTEU"nOW in use, that several years ceo he began to earn estly protest against the introduc tion of so muoh work into the publlo sohool oourse, contending that it was impossible for oblldren to do so muoh, ezoept at tlie ex pense of health, and that the results showed a deplorable lack ol thor oughness. That it is a orime to al low and oom pel oblldren under fourteen years of age to carry so much sohool work that they are obliged to study at nlgbt That there is as muoh danger of over training in lower gradee as there is ( undsttralnlng la higher grades. Mr Wann has hs I eitun ir.mble' with his ejee during the past year and tbe oculist advised him to Hrou school work for tbe year, thru 1 s might be sired the necessity of wearing glaoes tbe remainder of his life. For several months be ha been in charge ul tt Eugene and Southern Oregon districts is mana ging agent of a large life insurano oompacy. Tbe Democratic state campaign will be opened with music and torobligbt at Baker City tonight. Chamberlain's Linn County friends olaim he will get fifteen hundred majority in Linn, It is a good sign wben the people among whom he has passed most of his Oregon years are so enthusiastic in his behalf. Tbe paper box trust is not modest, having just capitalised at $9,000,000. It would not baye been surprising bad they made it ninety millions. Tbe trusts sre making watered capitalizations pay lutereBt on every hand. It is plain straight robbery this making the people pay returns on fiotitious valueB. An invention that made rapid railroading possible is within tbe lifetime of many still living. We refer to the V shaped pilot that throws aside stock and other ob structions from the traok. Loco motives bad nothing of the kind were squarely built until 1840 when George,C Cbarlott constructed the first pilot, or "oowoatcher" as it !b popularly known. Charlott died only the other day. If you have not registered with the county clerk at the courthouse do so right away. .Registration closes May 15, then if unreg istered you will be put to the trouble ol hunting up six citizens to vouch for your citizen.ihip before you will be allowed to vote on elec tion day. It is less trouble to registor now than to get tne necessary cortihcation on election day. Strikes a Rich Find. "I was troubled for several years with ohronlo Indigestion aud nervous debility," writes F J Gieen, of Lan easier, jx u.
