ADDRESSED ASSEMBLY THIS MORNINS. Last evening Rabbi Stephen B Wise, of Portland, addressed a large audlenoe of students of the University and visit ors on the subject, "Israel's Gifts to the World." Dr Wise Is acknowledeed to be one of the most elc jueut speakers in Oregon, and in his speech last even ing be did not fall below the expecta tion of bia hearers. The speaker did dot attempt to cover the wide field comprehended by his subject, endeav oring only, ae he euld, "to set to rest some common errors and adjust eome misconotptioos." His address waa not a plea; It was a statement of facts, tbe audlenoe being left to draw tbe con clusions. An attempt here in a few words to give an adequate Impression of tbe content of the address or powers of the speaker would be impossible, eo only a bare outline will be presented. The) points brought out were, Israel (1) gave to tbe world the Bible; (2) ree oued tbe Bible from deetruotloo at tbe fall of Jerusalem ; (3) contributed the best to tbe science of law and art of government; (4) gave tbe influenoe by the Hebrew Bible for the gaining of libert by all men; (5) gave to the world the Babbatb, a day of rest and recreation ; (0) gave to the world Chris tianity, It? Bible, and Its founder and founders; (7) gave to all nations an ex ample of loyalty and .compromise un wavering In these days. Dr Wise also spoke at assembly this morning. His thought was centered on "Culture," what It Is and for what ltexlBta. A significant point brought out was that pertalng to the relation of oulture to oommerolaliem. Dr Wise said tbe universities stand for oulture and oppose commercialism In Its de plorable tendencies. If a university accepts an endowment from a great commercial magnate or boss, It Bboald let Its donor know that the money, In Its Influence will be spent In opposi tion to commercialism and its tenden cies.
