The Demooratio nominee for sheriff, W W Withers, is ft native Oregonian. - He was born neat Corvallis about forty-two years ago. His parents moved from the Benton County farm to Look ing Glass Valley, Douglas County where they lived several years. ooming to Lane County when the now nominee for sheriff was about ten years old. Mr Withers bought farm two and one-half miles north of Eugene, and there the son grew to manhood, getting ft fair eduoatlon in the district tohool. - In time he married and later moved to farm on Fall Creek, where he was resident at the time of his first 'nomination end elec tion. His' first resldeno in' town was when he moved to Eugene to enter upon the duties of the -office he now holds. ' - How well W W Withers has ful filled and - satisfied publlo expecta tion is fittingly shown by the figures of his eleotloo. He was first eleoted by bare plurality of 25 votes. Two years ago be ' carried the elec tion by 794 majority. "The people liked him on better aoquaintanoe. He has forfeited none of that esteem. The quiet undercurrent of pubiio feeling sinoe the oonven Jons met does not laok indioatlons that his majority on the seoond day of June will not be far from that of 1900. And, apart from politlos, it ie pleasant to be able to say that s falthlul, conscientious discharge oi puhlio duties will render his re leotion a just tribute to personal worth and publio efQoienoy. The five Chicago olergymen who twk special trip to Kansas City the past week to attend the grand American handicap shojt and to see for themselves whether 10,000 pigeons to be killed during the oon tMt were to be slaughtered in an in human manner, returned home in time to fill their pulpits Sunday, and to denoonoe in the stro igeet of terms tht slaughter of the birds. One of them stated that he voioed the opinion of all when he said tbe t booting of tboee poor pigeons was more degrading tban the bull tights of Mexico ftnd Spain, At last Paris ie genuinely grate ful fur one benefit which it owes l American.. Tbe underground rail ways, though inoomplete, are hailed as a bleating not to be overeeti maled, Tbe Yanke investors are being feted and flattered it tbe hope that tbey will extend tbe its provement to all parte of the city. Even tbe tearing up of tbe thor oughfares, which made tbe usual epio and span oity resemble New York or Chicago, is forgiven, After a Texas detective followed ft man nine years to catoh him a careless jailer allowed him to walk out of tbe jail in daylight. Hie brother was allowed to visit tbe criminal and they changed olothing in the oell. They looked alike, and when the criminal walked out tbe jailer thought it was tbe visit ing brother. A New Jersey man woke up j net in time as be was being oarried to tbe grave yesterday. He broke the lid off the coffin, and, though it was not neoessary, told the aston ished undertaker and bis assistants that he was not dead. The Portland Cumberland Pres byterian congregation built a ohuroh then bought an organ, with the result that they will have to buy another lot and build an ad dition in which to house the in strument. The Portland oity jail rook-pile has been out of nee for the last month with the result that the jail is full of hoboes. Three meals a day in warm quarters is the attrac tion. Switzerland's president works for 13700 a year. Tbe oblef olerkB about tbe Washington departments get that muoh. But our salaries go on broadguage principles. Congress will not raise the Maine this year. ' They are not in a hur ry as there ie not tbe least doubt about the battleship being there when wanted. Mrs Hiltabiddle ie Buing for di vorce in the Lane County oirouit orart. The name, without taking the man into aooount, should be sufficient for a decree.
