An Effort Will Be Made to Reduce the S. P. Passenger Rate. The Guard has reoelved a marked oopy of tbe Portland Uhronlole with the followlug: There Is uo reason why the people who are forced to ride over tbe Bouth- ern Paolilo railroad should pay 4 cents ulle. The Houthern Paolflc Company oan curry passengers oheaper from points where they have compe tition. Take Oregon City for Instance. You oau ride that 16 miles on the H P for 25 cents. That Is 11 cents per mile. Between New Era and Portland Is a dlftauoe of , 22 miles and a fare of 40 oeuts, about 2 oeuts a mile. At one time they made a rate of 26 cents be tween Newbe'g and Portland, a dis tance of 24 miles. All of whioh shows that 4 cents a mile Is exorbitant and that the trains of the company oan be operated at a profit for less. In view of tbe fact that other railroads only charge 3 oeuts, and that the 8 P Co oan operate Its trains for less, it Is evi dent that the next legislature should make a legal rate of 3 cents a mile, and compel tbe 8 P Co to oarry passengers for that prloe. Eleot no one to tbe legislature uulesa he be pledged to a 8 cent a mile fare. The Houthern Paolfio Company Is the mostgreedyaud rapaolous monopo ly on tbe Pacifio coast, and everyone knows It. Its general passenger agent, Mr BB Miller, Is taking a hand In politic, and hopes tn have a leglsla- lature eleoted that will not Interfere with tbe graft. Let tbe voters see to It that every candidate for which they vote is pledged to make a legal 8 tents a mile fare. Tbe O It A N, Northern Pad Bo and A & C railroads all carry passengers a' 3 oeuts a mile or less, while tbe B P oontlnues to charge 4 cents, and that with a large travel, oheaper equipment and poorer roadbed than either of the other roads. Murder in the Mountains. BURNS, Maroh 12. Partlonlars have readied here of the killing, on Maroh 7tb, of Ueorge Simpson by Pat Moore, whiob was one of tbe most oold-bloodtd murders ever committed within the borders of Harney oounty. TheaOalr occurred In Alvord valley, In tbe south ern part of the oounty, about 160 miles from Burns. On Sale AT ...H. GORDON... The liousefurnisher The Best Goods. The Lowest Prices.
