Agt., J. M. William-., rortland, Ore. Iax Agent, E ene THE AFFAIR OF BUNKER, THE BOOKKEEPER Th? boy in the broker's office al ways had made a butt of Bunker. Hunker was tho bookkeeper, taciturn and rather solemn looking at all tunes. The boys culled Mm the old man." Hunker was forty, and "the boys" were twenty-one or thereabouts. All sorts of Jukes were played on old Bunker, but he never allowed the slightest sign of resentment. If any of the shafts of weak witticisms which were burled at him day In and day out pricked, there was no wincing. The cubs finally came to the conclusion that Bunker was dense physically and mentally. How this may have been nobody perhaps but Bunker himself knew deUnitely, but he was a good bookkeeper, and that was as far as the real old man of the office cured to Inquire. The office was on the twelfth floor, and Its windows looked out ore the roof of a low building and stared Into the twelfth story windows of a big building Just beyond. Teddy Long, tho office masher, had a desk nt ono win dow. Teddy frequently was more oc cupied with the office behind the win dows In the twelfth story of the build ing beyond than he was with the busi ness In his own office. It was a law flrni that held the premises opposite, and the lawyers were known to tho boys lu the broker's office for the fre quency with which they changed their typewriting staff. About once a month a new face, and always a pretty one, would appear In front of the machine back of the legal windows. One morn ing Teddy Long cast his eyes acroBS the way, and there he saw a new face behind the big window pane. As he told the other boys a few minutes aft er, this new face had all the others that had gone before "beat to death." "She's a daisy, fellows," Bald Teddy. "When you get a" chance, go to the wludow and shy a look over there. She's got blnck hair, snapping eyca, red cheeks and a daisy figure." All at once the charmer looked up and smiled, showing a set of even white teeth In a framework of scnrlet. Teddy smiled back and nodded almost imperceptibly. There was a very de cided bow In return, and Teddy went soaring. Instantly, however, the young woman turned again to her machine. and her white fingers went flying nim bly over the keys. Though she might be a bit given to flirting, the young wo man apparently did not menu that the little weakness should divert her mind too long from her work. Teddy half wheeled his chair around. the pleasurable little excitement still glowing within him. There at the next window stood old Bunker, the book keeper, with 0 face as red as a peony and Btnndlng first on one foot and then on the other. "Crent Scott!" Bald Teddy to himself. "The old man had his eyes on the charmer and thought she me;.nt that emllo for him! Ho looks as though he were going to faint. That smile for him! Why, the poor old geezer, he's addle pated! I'll put tho boys next" So Teddy told the boys of how tho girl had smiled on him and how the old man thought the Binllo was Intended for htm and had blushed like a girl and fiddled with his fingers. "We'll have some fun with tho old guy, fellows. I'm going to get an Introduction to the girl over the way, nnd I'll tell her all about Bunker and how if a woman speaks to him he has a fit, and she can just lead him on a bit, and we'll hnvo all sorts of fun here with the doings." The next day there was another sweet smile from the typewriter, and Teddy responded In kind. Curiously enough, old Hunker was at the other window ngaln, nnd when that smile came across the areaway he blushed like Are and cast a furtive glance at Teddy. Teddy Baw It. "We've got him going," he said to himself. "The old fellow's hit sure. I hope he doesn't die of apoplexy before he makes out the pay roll. He looks as though be wero going to choke." So It went on for weeks. Teddy met the charmer occnnlonally and sent her Into ecstasies of laughter over tho ac counta of the fun they were having with old Bunker. "Why, when you Bmlle," he said to her, "the old man goes up Into tho nineteenth heaven. I'm glad you smil ed over at me that morning, for office work now Is as good as a show." One morning Hunker showed up with red carnation In his buttonhole. When Teddy looked through the win dow, he saw that there was a bunch of the same kind of flowers pinned to the waist of the neighbor over the way. After Bunker had received his morn ing smile Teddy spread the nevta of the flowers. "The old man's got 'em bad," be Bald. Bunker went on his vacation, and the smiling face was also missing from the window In the lawyer's office. The Wednesday morning following Bun ker's departure every man In the office found a square envelope on bis desk which when opened contained an an nouncement rending like this: Ur. tnd Mrs. Jcl Halbert loooune. the mir riire of tMr daughter Miry to Mr. HiMiry Hunker Monday, Oct. 7, at 6L CbrrsostODi's church. One envelope contained a second In cisure. It wan that which was ad dressed to Teddy Long. Teddy read the marriage announcement with star ing eyes and, then, picking up the in closnre, read this neatly typewritten communication: Mr. Busker sad I htr. known each other for five years. We wct rtifacrd for flr. months bt for I went to work fit the lawyer's office. I rsn't roncetre how anrtdy emild be surh a fool to try to grab off s rmlle that waan't Intended Ijr turn. DEPTH OF A RAINFALL. rie Method br Wfctcli It Is Accural.. IT Mestaared. Probably one question that has pus sled the lay mind Is how the depth of a rainfall may b accurately determined. The way it la done Is this: A funnel whose larger aperture rep resents a surface of 100 square Inches is placed In a position where It may catch the direct fall of the rain, with the rim of the funnel extending per haps an Inch or more beyond the plat form to which It may be fixed. This Is for the purpose of preventing any rain from being washed Into the funnel nri 1nepMialii th. tni. full Vmh. .1.1. " funnel the water runs to a tube which bears an exact and carefully deterniin- ed ratio to the area of the fuunel'a mouth, say one-tenth. If, therefore, the tube shows water to the depth of an inch, It Is clear that one tenth of an Inch of rain has fallen. The tube Is provided with a carefully grad uated scale so that the fall may be readily seen. Three Inches of rain would show a depth of SO Inches In a tnbe one-tenth tho size of the receiving aperture, nnd the decimals of an Inch could be quickly noted by observing the scale. If placed on the roof of a building, the apparatus should be kept away from the edgea to prevent any peculiar slant of the wind carrying Into tho fun nel a larger proportion of rain than would fail Into It under normal condl Hons. The larger tho aperture of the receiving funnel is made the more ac curate will bo the results obtained. A curious fact that hns been noted In connection with rainfalls Is that gauges placed on roofs usually gather leas wa ter than those placed on tho gronnd. This Is accounted for on the theory that the rain In falling absorbs some of the moisture of the air, and the greater dls tance It falls the larger will be the bulk of the Individual drops. New iork Herald. THE DEER'S HORNS. They rresent all the Pkeaoaiess ol AnlmRl amd Vegetable) Growth. Why and how Is the deer so peculiar ly unlike any other of the bovine race, the horn differing so materially from all the horned cattle in its composition, growth, maturity and decline? It pre sents all the phenomena of animal and vegetable growth. It sprouts from tho brain without any prolongation of the frontal bone. It rises and breaks through the sinews and takes root on the bone, growing the same as a vege table. It Is nourished by and secretes albumen upon the surface and disposes of the fibrlne the same as an animal. It la clothed with a skin and hairy coat very different from that on the rest of the body. This covering and hair possess a property unknown In other animal bodies that of being a styptic to stanch its own blood when wounded. It carries marks of the ago on tho buck by putting out an extra branch each year, which showB an ad ditional power each year to produce them. And this power does not exist In the female. So this difference is more distinctly marked than in any other class of animals. Again, tho born possesses properties unknown In any other animal matter. It Is entirely In odorous, capable of resisting putrefac tion and almost Impervious to the ef fects of the atmosphere. . And still water at 300 degrees F. will dissolve theso boms readily, even though they are not soluble in alcohol and resist the action of adds and alka lies. It Is the only vegeto animal sub stance that we know of thnt does not perpetuate Itself by procreation. The male and the female are sustain ed by the same nutrition and elements, and the male only produces horns. This phenomenon Is quite as much of a curi osity as the absence of the horn In the back after shedding. The Dramatis In Mfe. The nndylng Interest which is taken In the theater Is explained by the very profound line with which Shakespeare began a very silly speech. "AH the world's a stage." People as a rule take no Interest in anything that Is not dramatically (or, as in the caae of poli tics, melodramatically) formulated. Any creed to be popular must be dra matically stated. Therefore the gos pels are preferred to the epistles. Esop's fables are remembered because they are the truth about things stated dramatically and morally. IT. G. Ber nard Shaw. An Armleae Wonder. Bulwer in bis "Artificial Change line" makes mention of one John Sim ons, a nntlvo of Berkshire, England, 1 born without arms or hands, who could write with bis mouth, thread a needle, tie a knot, shuffle, cut and deal a pack of cards, etc This wonderful person age was exhibited In London in 1058.
