It Is the night after a day of battle. With face uiK-ovonl. pale under the leaden sky. a young soldier Is lying. His bmuU are bl:uk nith Kwdvr and his clothes are pierced with bullet holes, lie was In the very heart of the titt!e, under full fire, aud his com rades, 6eelng him fall, believe him to be dead. Cut he still lives. He calls with all his remaining strength, hut the only rcsKinse is moans aud the gurglt of the death rattle. At last, numb with cold and pain, exhausted by the whis tling of grape aud canister, the dash ing of cauuous uud all the scenes of a bloody contest, and overcome by the deep quiet of nature, he is on the point of giving up and abandoning himself to 6leep or to death. Suddenly on the faroff borlrou be sees through his half opou eyes three black specks come out of the north and gradually grow larger as they ai prouch. They havo wings dark wings that bear them on. Soon they stop aliove his head, and he sees three ra vens suspended In the white air, motion less with tranquillity of beasts of prey on the lookout for victims, while the atmosphere Is yet vibrating from the shock of battle. The almost imper ceptible beating of the great wings as the birds poise iu midair seems like the Muttering of three flags of war. euch one hearing as its emblem a hovering raven. "Have they come for me?" he asked himself, faint with terror. He shudders ns he watches the three ravens descend Blowly nnd perch ou a hillock but a short distance from him. They ure Indeed grcut birds fat. glossy and well fed. Not a feather Is missing from their sleek plumage. Moreover, these birds live lu the very midst of carnage. They not only live lu it, but they even thrive on It and look on from afar from great heights beyond the reach of bulletii descending only when the regiments are goue and the dead and dying meet on the same dreadful plane. In truth, these birds have an air of Importance. They salute one another with their beaks, they inarch to and fro. ns If on dress parade, leaving the prints of their pointed claws on the reddened snow. Then, when they have acted the purt of fops to perfection, they begin to croak softly, very softly, without taking their eyes from the dy ing uuiu. "Cousins," says one of them, "1 have brought you hither for that little sol dier of France who is lying there be fore you. lie was a proud little soldier, intimated by uuusual courage, but pos sessing neither prudence nor reflection. Sec lus riddled coat mid consider how many balls were uecessary to bring him low. Cousins, it is line prey, and. If you are willing, we will partake, lint we must wait yet a little before we go to him. Though his arms are bruised and his hands seem powerless, he, would be an object to be feared If he should revive." The speaker Is the lurgest of the party. The fwo others, us they ITShmi, keep out of the reach of his ferocious, hooked beak. He continues: "Ah, we shall soon partake! I will eat bis heart. It was n warm, valiant heart and will rejuvenate mine." Lioes the little soldier bear what they are saying? la It true, then, that his heart no longer bents? The second raven tnkes up the sen tence: "1 will eat his eyes. French eyes ar Inrge nnd clear and beaming with life." Quick, open your eyes, little soldier. and cry out loudly. Though yon are weak from loss of blood, a little still re mains In your veins. Alas! Truly do they say that be Is dead, and when, their conference ended, the three birds approach him with evil eye and ravenous beuk and drooping wings not u quiver passes through his body, l'oor little soldier of Francel They are going to dismember hlin. They will begin with the buttons on bis coat, for these birds of plunder gather up everything that glistens even blood. Softly the three birds draw near, and the oldest of them ventures a peck at bis finger. Then the soldier rouses; hla whole frame starts. "Ue la not dead: lie Is not dead!" cry the cowardly birds, retreating to their hillock. Ab, no! The little soldier of France la uot dead. He raises bis head. dlgnatlon has brought back something of the old spirit. Ills eyes grow bright, his nostrils dilate. The air seems less heavy aud he breathes more freely. A ray of the pale red winter sun creeps across the torn und furrowed earth. As he gazes in aduilrutlon at the mel aucholy sunset, gradually fading Into the glimmer of twilight, suddenly, un der the warmth of bis citended hand tbe slow melting snow ei poses a green point a tiny blade of wheat Miracle of life! The dying man feela as if be were born again. Heating bis bands on the toll of bis fatherland, be tries to alt up. From afar the three birds watching blni prepare for flight, and when they see blin standing up right at lost, searching with treiu bliug step for bis abandoned arms, they slowly rise from their hillock end soa away toward the uortb, already dark with night From tho sky echo back the beating of their terrible wings aud tbe snapping of their strong beaks. It is a hurried, tumultuous flight of mln eled fear n-.d raire. One reads of t'umlit vilic having missed their vic tims, light among themselves as the 'rtao.e inrr-Mahle Proverbs. What ye Iruld of. T I had an Idol from Ceylon. They said It was Buddha. One day a fellow come along who looked sick In fact, he hadu't a bit of flesh ou hla tioncs. "I'm fur from well," says he nerv ously. "Rut you needn't lie frightened of Infection or anything like that. Fact is. I've been poisoned poisoned near a place I've got iu west Ceylon, near l'a latupanc. It begau five years ago last mouth," he went on in a dreary Bort of way, "and I anpposp I was In some de gree to blame at tirst. "You see, there was so little for a man to do atmut my district, and not a soul to speak to except natives, and one naturally got wild for a bit of ex citement Still, I think I must have had some drink In me at tho timo or 1 ahouldu't have gone messing round a temple. 1 suppose t,ie priests looked further ahead and thought they could get more out of me dead than alive. So they poisoned mc." "But pardon me. wasn't It rather a mad thing of you to eat anything In auch a place?" "I neither ate nor drunk. I was not so Insane as that. "One of them gave me a push with a cano he hnd In his hand, nnd t felt a tiny prick and the thing was done. "It was uot till a week after that 1 begun to get seedy. Hut tho worst of It was no one could make out exactly what was the matter with mo neither native quack nor white doctor and for three whole years I hadn't a ghost of a notlou myself cither. 1 Just wasted down. "It was Just three years after that uf falr lu the temple that I got tho first Inkling of whnt was the iuntter wltb me, and then only Indirectly from whisperings among tho coolies. Hut a man In as bud a tlx as I wub will clutch at any hope, and so I got a puliiuquln rigged aud had myself carried away through the woods to tho gloomy little temple. "Tho priests wcro fulsomely civil. They remembered my honored visit, tlmo back; wcro prostrated with tho honor I did them iu apologizing, but flatly denied that they hud any hand In doing evil to my celestial person. "So I w.'iit wenrily buck again anil In a week had a mysterious communica tion banded mo how. I know not- couched in very grammatical liugllsh. It stilted simply that for uiy Insult to them the gods, through their servuut priests, bad chosen to punish me. Al ready 1 had tusted of their power In that I bad wasted from a heavy, strong man to a puny skeleton. I could suvo myself by delivering my own rausom on the threshold of the temple. Years buck, so I rend, a wandering Irlsbmnu bud visited the shrluo nnd bad purloined a bronzo statue of Uud dha possessed of Infinite sanctity. IIo had departed, leaving smnll trace, and hud taken with him the Huddha to the place whence bo had como. "The letter wont on to give a rulnuto description of the lost trcusuro and its probablo whereabouts aud wound up by uHsurlug ma that It, and It alone, contained tho solo anlldoto which would cure inc. How the hcnllng drug was to be ndmlnlstered tho writer for bore to tell, but that would bo shown when the Image was replaced iu Ha shrine. Convincing as tills letter wus, I be lieve I should bnye disregurded tho ad vice but fur one thing. Accompanying It were notes for ten thousand rupees. A Cingnleso native may IIo, hut he will never outldy hlB money without seolng clearly a very good return for it. "And ao I act out, with old death al ways spurring mo to hurry In tho search, and after threo wcury months I have found tho Huddha In your house. It remains to ace If you will surrender It to mo." That was the fellow's yarn. Of courso I took hlin to be mad at first but as ho went on, In spite of myself I could not help believing In It. I took him Into the hall and bo spotted the beastly green tiling on Its perch In a minute. "That's my fate," says be; "and, look you, Inside It there ought to be a small packet of purple powder done up lu a scrap of suukeskln. Muy I look?" "Go ahead." says I; and, reaching up bis bony hands with a bit of a shudder, be presses a knob, and I'm blessed if tho little Idol's stomach didn't awing out on a binge, showing a tiny cup hoard which held the speckled snake- skin and tho stuff, Just as he said, "And whnt are you asking for this piece of bronze? You know what it's worth to mc, but I've not much money left I ask you, as a man, not to be too hard wltb the price!" "Oh, confound you!" says I, a bit cou fusedly. "I may be fond of driving a tiff bargain over horsehair sometimes, but I'm not altogether a brute. Take tho ugly thing with you and welcome.' Well, tho fellow went away, aud for a long time I beard no more of him. and Mabel aald I'd been swindled by a clever rogue, and I began to think aa much myself, although I didn't say ao. Aud then, by Jove, a long letter full of thenka came to Bay that he'd delivered up his prlzo, and the priests stood to their promise and be waa gutting well rapidly. And after thut we dldu t bear any thing more till about a couplo of mouths ago, when aomo lawyer out there wrote to say that the poor fellow bad gone dead from anaku bite and left me all Ills property.
