The Oregonian Pays the Old Pio neer, M. Wllkins, a Deserved Compliment. OreRonlan, Sept 29, M Wllkins, Oregon's greatest btate fair worker, was a visitor at tin fair grounds today. He Is 83 years old and one of the organizers of the itate agri cultural society at Oregon City In I860, Id the 40 years that tiave elapsed since that time be has missed but three sea Ions of the fair, but thinks this will be his last. Be was for many years pres ident of the agricultural society and was a member of the old board of managers until the state assumed con trol of the fair under the new law en aoted In 1890. For several years Mr WlUlns and John Mlnto were the main supporters of the state fair. Mr Wllkins was Oregon's" repreeen tatlve at the Hurt International exposl tlon In America, held In Philadelphia In 1K70. He put up an Oregon exhibit again at New Orleans In 1884, and made several trips to Chicago In 1803 In the Interests of Oregon. His son, Jasper Wllkins, of Coburg, has taken up tbe state fair work and la a member of the present board. Mr Wllkins la suflerlng from paraly sis and It was with some difficulty that he made his way about the grounds. He walked unassisted, how. ever, and enjoyed many a handshake with old friends.
