CENTURY DEVELOPMENTS., This has I 'in a century of wonderful development, or more properly speaking the latter be If century. Take farming conditions In 1800, the farmer used the Dickie, the scythe and the flail. His plow wan made nf wutd.coverf J with a thin rihrnt ofii.ui. Sesde were eoatterr 1 by baud, und the hi 3 did the cultivating. Grain was gathered by hand threshed on the floor during tbe winhr season, and crushed between a b' km pontile lnt j 0 ur or ground iu the iiuiu boriug flour mill. The mower, reaj -r and self-binder were un Jcnown. Tbe difference bet won tbe conditions on the larm In lfX) nd those of 1900 can be boat n preened In the following quoiition lrom the Year Book of Agriculture of the United States for 1S97: "When far ueri reaprd their wheat with sickles and bound the Btraw by hand, hauled the sheave to the barn and thrtsbe l tbe grain With flvls, those open! 'oua, ap-1 plied to one bushel of wheat, re quired the labor of one man 160 minutes, whereas this work is now done by the use of a combined reaper and thresher operated by steam, with four minutes of human labor." WARNING AGAINST MOB RULE. Bloomi.vgton, 111, Sept 20. Speaking at the McKinley mem orial exeroises here, Former Vice President Stevenson said: "It avails little to hurl denuncia tion against the head of this as sassin. Within a few days at most be will, under the forms of law, suffer tbe death penalty for his crime. It is but cheap courage at best, whether from the streets or from tbe pulpit, for any man to declare that had he boen present he gladly would have been the avenger. Such teaching is a menace to the well-being of sooiety. It may be tbat tbe temptation is often great to take the law into our hands. But let it not be forgotten that by so doing we weaken the bonds of so ciety. Mob rulo is destructive of u.'I government." The Yukon country is a great gold producer. Three million dol lars were shipped out in August. The shipments for the three months unding AuguBt 31st were a little over eighteen millions. Ills vlgllunt little wife had exhauated her bountiful store of expedients In trying to dis cover the mystery. Cajolery, threats, wheedling, expostulation, argument, all the Intricate wiles employed by skillful women to get at the Inner thoughts of her lord and master, were brought Into play without avail. Klnnlly she became desperate, and to mollify her Greenlee Intimated that he was planning a Joyous surprise for her. Ho let fall the hint that be bad been on the right side of the stocks In a recent deal nnd "wlfey" was going to reap the benefit. Beyond this he would not utter a word. At last he announced with a grand flourish that his surprise was ripe. Without going Into any details he would simply suggest that any one who was Interested might have his or her curiosity satisfied by securing a position at the front windows at or about 2 o'clock that nfternoon. Then ho hastened away, deHplto the almost angry protests of "wlfey" that he cer tainly should tell her in advance of the others. Hut Greenlee was obdurate. "The surprise Is for you, dearie," he said, "and I want It to be complete. I sbi.ll look for you nt the front window up stairs about 2 o'clock, and when you see what it Is you will forgive me for not telling you and spoiling it all." As soon ns ho had departed all tho women In tho house Immediately went into executlvo session for tho four hundredth tlmo since they had first noticed symptoms of Greenlee's secret. All of tho old straw was vigorously thrashed over, but they were finally forced to give up the problem, Just as they had done before. Then Mrs. Greenlee went up stairs and indulged In a spiteful little cry all by her lone some. After this she bathed her eyes, put on her best clothes, eradicated the tear stains with plentiful dnbs of pow der, and hunted up the other women to sec if any of them had evolved a working Idea, but they wero still groping In the dark. Meanwhile the day wore on and 2 o'clock was approaching. The resi dents of the house lined up at tho win dows after much sparring for the best positions. The little ormolu clock chimed tho hour of 2, and five pairs of eyes searched the avenue up and down, hut thero was no traco of Earl Green lee and his monstrous "surprise." Occasionally some one would go to tho street door and peer through tho mazo of vehicles aud individuals thronging tho avenue, aud it was even suggested that opera glasses might be used to ad vantage. Then the clock struck tho hour of 8. "Dear me I" said Mrs. Greenlee, bouncing to her feet "I had nn engage ment Tvlth tho church committee of which I am chairman at 8 o'clock. It will never do to miss It, and I'm going, surprise or no surprise. I have already waited an hour for Mr. Greenlee, nnd now he cnu wait an hour for mo. TIo my face veil, please; I'm In a dreadful hurry. Kear mc! I was never Into In my lifo before, and It's all on account of Earl Greenlee and his exasperating mystery." Ten minutes later sho was whirling down tho nvcuuo in a enh she had hailed at the comer, busily engaged lu framing a suitable excuse for her tardi ness, when the cab slowed up. "What Is the matter, cabman? I told you to drive rapidly. You must not stop until wo reach the church." "Had to stop, mem; tliero's Borne thln doln ahead of us here, and my horse la akeart Mrs. Greculco opened tho cab door and peered out. Then sho stepped out. Just ahead of them, careening from ono side of tho nrenuo to the other, butting sidewalks and lampposts, madly charging the curbing, roaring, hissing and snorting, wns an automo bile. Finally the unruly machine gnvo ono triumphant lunge, vainly tried to climb up the solid stotio wall of n club house and fell back, broken nnd help less, a mass of twisted steel and pungent gasoline. Then tho wreck of a man pried him self looso from the smoking debris and Hopped down on tho edge of the side walk, where he sworo softly nnd scraped tho oil from what remained of his garments. "Denr me! I wonder If tho man Is hadly hurt?" said Mrs. Greenlee as she adjusted her hellotropo toque aud waited over to where ho was sitting, Tho man looked up. Smudges of dU8t and oil, streaks of gasoline, traces of blood aud shreds ot clothing adorned his countenance. "Merciful heavens Earl Greenlee!' screamed his wife, throwing her hands into the ilr and threatening to collapse. "That's all right, dearie; I'm not hurt." Then he slowly nud painfully arose and surveyed the wreckage be side him. "I ordered this automobile throe weeks ngo meant to give it to you guess 1 have not had tlmo to learn It yet, but I Intended to surprlso you." "Well, welll" said little Mrs, Green lee, panting with excitement and wringing her hands. "Well, you've cer tainly surprised me. Yes, you've been even more successful than that you've shocked me. Now, get right Into this eati and let me hurry you home before t iy of our friends see you." The church couuulttea fretted and stewed nnd conjectured, but the able chairman did not come. The oilier residents or the Greenlee house kept ceaseless ic!l at the front windows, but they were disappointed, for his wife sneuUed htm In the hack way. rhleairo Uiv-ord Herald.
