The UBual summer force of forest rangers to protect the forest reserves of Oregon and Washington will be taken on tbe pa; roll about June 1, as in seasons past, and will be retained through the dry summer months, The lorce this year will be about tbe same size as that whiob was employed last summer, and in making the appointments, due preference will be given to those who were employed as rangers in past soasons, provided their service was satisfactory. There will be from forty-five to fifty rangers in both Oregon and Washington. Inasmuch as thie foroe was competent to properly guard the forest against fires and depredations a year ago, there ic now no apparent necessity for making any increase in numbers. The total number of ranger? en-ployed on all the reserves last summer, the highest number yet authorized, war 445. They were uder the direction of nine super intendents and thirty-nine super Visors. This is an increase of ninety-live in the number of rangers over the proceeding year, when many disastrous Grea occurred, and burned considerable areas belore they were extinguished. Tbe total appropriation for forest protection for the fiscal year begin ning July 1, like that for the cur rent year, is $300,000. There is ever reason to believe that this sum will provide all the forest rangers that are required during the dry season. It is stated at tbe land oflioe that the administration of the past year was entirely satis factory, the foroe ample, and that it was the first year when the reserves were adequately patrolled. Except in Southern forests, where there is a prolonged dry season, the rangers will be retained but a few mouths, as has beeu tbe custom herlufore. SOME RAILROAD RECORDS. Two railroad spood records have been made recently. A through train from Pari to Russian Pacifio part of Ylavidistock ojvered the ton thousand miles between the two cities in 420 hours, au average of twenty-four miles an hour. In April President Hill of the Great Northern made the trip with his private tram from Seattle to St Paul, 1823 miles, in 45 hours and CO minutes, an average spied of forty miles an hour. Two sets of engineers and firemen were used (iu eight hour shifts. On one Btretch of ten miles the train ran at an e'ghty-f iur mile hour speed. his dream of glory. Portland Telecram. "f am a stanch Oregonian, don't you know, but of course must stand by my alma mater," said an af fected cad, who was present t the collegiate meet at Eugene, and had probably attended Berkeley a year more or le. e, Then he proceeded to force his way into a bunch of California traok men who had no ase for him and paid no attention to him, and after it was all over returned to Corvallis or Albany or some other inland town to dream about the glory of it all for the year to come. One of tbe most novel features of the navy exhibit at the Buffalo Pan-American Exposition is a large map of the world, eight by sixteen feet, on which are 'placed models of every ship in the navy. Each day, as telegraphic notifica tion is received, of ths exact loca tion of each vessel, the vessels are moved about the man in accordance with this information, so that the vUitor may Bee just where every vessel in the navy is each day. Tbe sporting editor of the Port land Telegram wants to honor President McKinley bv inviting him "to pitch the first ball at the opening professional game in Port land." It would be a good sight f ir outsiders, but embarassing to iur o' iaf magistrate. lie is not liable to pitch tint "first ball." Pure Home Made Brandy.
