The Medford "Mail" of last week says: "The Medford city conncil is, in street parlance, 'up against the real thing.' At the regular session of the board, held on Tues day evening of this week, some astounding foots were disclosed. Treasurer Straight's report was read and from it was learned that the town was about $09,000 in debt, and that during the last two .years the town's indebtedness had in creased $19,000. This inorease was mainly due to the purohaBe ot the eleotrio light plant and the putting In of the sewerage system. The board also found that the eleotrio light plant was in debt; that its operation sinoe the purchase of the plant last April had been $ 1000 in oxoess of the income from lights, Five hundred dollars of this deflou had been transferred from tbi general fund, which leaves the plant, as above stated, $500 in debt, When to this is added the bix per cent interest on the light plant purchase price, it is found that the plant has aotually cost the town $1500 during the last ten months' Toe oounoil also found that the reoeipts for water rentB during the paBt year bad beon $1400. The amount paid for wood for the water system during this time was $1800, engineer's salary, $480. Besides these items there are the reparirs made and oil used. The water oom mittee has' estimated that the ex penditures have been at least $1000 in excess of receipts." K0T DOWN ON THE PROGRAM. Montana Miner: ' "An inoldent, not down on the program, occurred at the lodge meeting of the Mac cabees Saturday evening, and the details which have leaked out are too good to remain unpublished. Among the candidates to be initiated was Bert Chamberlain, who has spent a few years among the cow boys and is fond of fun. Some one well up in the myteries of the work had evidently been coaching the candidate, for at an interesting part of some side degree, where a voloe calls out in the semi darkness, "Seize the Villain!" nj the guides step forward to blni the supposed victim to a tree, Bert sprang back, drew out two revolvers, saying "No you don't," and began firing right and left. The lodge room was quickly cleared, and it it Mid some of the guides aotually dropjujd out of lbs second story window to avoid the carnage. When it was after wards discovered that blank cart lidges were used, and that the candidate was only giving an historic exhibition of life and customs among the Montana cow boys, the joke was oa the other fellows, and they resolved that smoker wu in order." INTERESTING FCTS. In bis boyhood laziness was the prevailing sin of Kitubeuer. Hii father eeut him to school for girls as an heroic remedy. India lost 21,021 of her ixpula tion last year beoause of fatal make bites, a far greater number of deatbB than resulted from all the battles of the McKinley and Chamberlain wars of the last two years. It is of interest to koow that New York State produces twenty-five vari eties of Bnakes, three of them poisonous, but deaths therefrom are rare. Possibly as compensation for his single good eye Senator Tillman can write with either band. Tony GlovennI, 2 years old, was seized and carried off by an im mense gray eagle recently while the obild was in the yard of bis home in a Denver suburb. The ohild's screams brought the father and two other men to the door in time to see the bird and the child dissappear over the bluff of the Piatt river. The men gave chaBe and saw the eagle alight on a small island covered with underbruBb, half a mile from the child's home. When the men arrived at the island the bird attempted to rise again with the boy, bat bis clothing caught in a bush, and the eagle, seeing the men close at hand with clubs, dropped his prey and flew away. The boy Is not badly hurt. LOOKING BACH To the time when she was plucked from uie very grawp ot acatli, uie natural im pulse of the womanly heart is thankful ness for the means which saved her, ana a uesire to Help other women in like case. Those are the motives which prompted Mrs. Kva Burnett to write the accompanying testi monial to the curative power of Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription, This is only one cure out of thousands. No one would dure sny that the average won in ii wn not as truthful ns she is good. And it is the truthful testimony of the avernge woniim that " Favorite- Pre scription" cures womanly discuses when oil other means and medi cines absolutely Tail. Might Result in Benefit O. 0. U. FIJPtCIl STATUS. While tbsrs is no Information to be bad locally regarding tbe purchase of oontrol of tbe Houtheru Paciflo by the Harriman syndicate aad in tbe inter est of tbe Union Pacific, says tbe Ore gonlan, there I muoh local speculation as to what tbs new deal means for this country. It is assumed by some that It means a closer affiliation of the Ore gon lines tbe OR 4K aud tbe Ore gon 4 California. Tbe latter is now opt rated by tbe Southern Paoiflo Com pany under a lease tbat will not ex pire until 1927, but it lacks a good deal of paying expenses, and it Is not doubted tbat tbe Harriman Interest will do sumstblng io improve the status of tbe property, even if it should be necessary to wring It through a bankruptcy oourt. Tbe Oregon California (tioutbern Paoiflo lines in Oregon) Is not a neces sary part of the (Southern Paciflo sys tem, as tbe O R 4 N Is of tbe Union Pacific. It plays a comparatively In significant part in transcontinental business. Its main office is tbat ol local oarrler. A transcontinental line must get to tbe ooast; it is not obliged to have connections paralleling tbe seashore. Bucb roads fill the offliw of feeders merely for the main system This bas. been the relation of tbe Ore gon A California to the main lines of the lessee corporation. It might be ullenlated from tbs Houtbern Pacific without Impairing the value or earning power of tbe main system, and If those In oontrol find there is something to be gained by a realignment of tbe proper tyby combining It wltb tbe O B A N, for example It is not douoted tbat such disposition will be made of It. And tbe concensus of opinion is tbat there Is something to De gained by snob an arrangement. It la well known tbat tbe Oregon A California does not pay expenses; In fact, that tbe annnal deficit Is about $500,000. July 1 , 18U0, the liabilities ot the oompany exceeded its assets by tfi,4ai,8l7. Tbe move tbat was begun nearly a year ago to out the Oregon A Califor nia loose from tbe Southern Pacific in the Interest of tbe Northern Paoiflo, was believed to expose the desire or willingness of the Southern Paoiflo to be rid of Its Oregon lines. That was before the death of Mr Huntington. Now tbat totally different alignments have been made, It would not surprise many well informed people to see the Oregon A California reduoed to a work ing basis and yoked up wltb tbe O R A N. Tba separate ofnolal organlza tlon of tbe O B A N has every appear ance of permanence and an alliance of the Oregon A California wltb It Is re garded as not only among tbe proba bilities, but also highly desirable. . In various other ways tbe obanged oontrol of tbe Southern Paclho is deemed In the Interest of Oregon. If it should rssult In nothing more than getting tbe Oregon A California on a proper flnanolal basis, and thus give an efficient management a show to make a record, It would be much. It Is believed, however, tbat the new In fluence will be more favorable to Ore gon tha the Huntington Influence was, and more favorable to Portland. This Is expected to help Western Ore gon In Innumerable ways. Red Hot From tbe Gun Was the ball tbat hit UBSteadman, of Newark, M Ion, In the Civil War.
