Robt Alexander, of Comstocke, who was in town this week is de vising plans lor the manufacture of ship knees from the stumps and root of the trees felled for logs and piling. Formeriy, in the logging business, more than half the pro duct of a lorest, be believes, was wasted. The stumps were cut bigb from the ground and a long pieos from the lop of ths tree was deemed too small for sawing into lumber, and this, with ths burning of the slabs, etc, made a great waste of valuable material. With the small top section used for piling, the main trunk for lumber, and the stump and large roots for ship knees, and a proper utilisation of the slabs, the whole tree would be used for valu able purpases and prove of oorree pondingly greater worth to Umber men. Messrs Campbell & Alexander re preparing for the construction of an extensive tramway near Hud son, to facilitate the handling of their oordwood, piling and logging business, and will probably employ 150 men the present season. Thus utilising the whole product, the land will be left radically clear and muoh of it can be utilised for gardens, orchards, vineyards and pasture lands, thus adding to the permanent wealth of the country.
