Florence West, Jan 18: A great number of logs have been swept to sea during the part week, owing to the carelessness of the booming companies in not being prepared for acoldeuts. Several millions of test of timber had come down In the previous freshet and tilled the upper boom, and the logs were being assorted and taken to tbe south boom, but the work was not yet completed when tbe Inst flood came and filled the remaining space In tbe upper boom. Then the mischief was to pay. The ehc:r to the lower boom was thrown out and plaoed In readiness to send tbe logs Into south slough, where there Is a storage oapaslty for a great many millions of feet of timber. Logs were soon striking It rapidly, when in some manner they beoame jammed, tbe boom was broken, and thuy were hur rying toward tbe sea. There Is no knowledge of the number of logs wliioli came down, but it Is variously estimated tbat from l.COO.OOO to 8,C30,0:D feet of timber have bean carried to sea, entailing a lops of thou sands of dollars to loggers and sawmill men. This Is a moBt deplorable state of affairs, as many of those who had logs In tbe river, upon which they depended largely fir tuelr mainten ance and the continuation of work during the coming season, will be ser iously handicapped by lack nf meani next summer. For forty-eight hours, beginning Saturday morning and lasting until Monday neon, there was a continuous profession of the best of timber passing out of tbe river. While several hun dreds of thousands of feet of logs were saved by lodging agalutt the fish trap piling, and a great many others were towed ashore and tied up along tbe banks of tbe river at various places, only a small per cent were saved. Loggers are beginning to show up Id Florence and are busy lnveitlg&tlng the extent of their losses. It Is found to be a dlOlcnll matter to tf II Just what they are owing to the logs being badly I3atrered. 'rnose v. no have visited the ocean beaoh report tbat thousands of logs may be seen scatt"red along the sea wall nc rib ot tbe river. An enterpris ing man with a portable sawmill will have a god Job there s me day manu factuiing lumber from these logs. 8ev eral mlllluLs of feet may be sxved In Mils way. TeachcrV Examination.
