MILITARISM.
We are aware that tbe people,
generally, look upon , the ory ol
"Militarism" in tbe Unihd Statue
as without substantial foundation,
and made for politioal effect,
ll'inever figures do not pUie the
sujoeot in the most pleasing light.
Governor Roosevelt many times
during the campaign referred to
our, present army of 100,000 men
and asked who in this free oountry
would ' lie afraid of an army whiob
represented only oae sildier for
750 people. Did you ever stop u
think that out of 750 people tlieri
are only about 120 men availabli
for military duty? , Now then, in
crease our army- to : 250,000, ' as i
being urged by the military author
ities, and in faot is being demanded
by the bflloere in the Philippines
and we are confronted by. tbe
alarming spectaole of one man in
every available 50 being forced tr
take op arms. ' -
. It is a faot whioh stands without
tear of intelligent contra liotion that
tbe war department would find
considerable difficulty in increasing
the army even 25 per cent - at the
present., A draft would be a mili
tary neoossity. If tbe - integrity
of our land, or life and liberty were
at Btake, a call for volunteers would
be aniwered by the thousands, but
under present conditions the result
would be otherwise.
It may be that we shall ' know !n
the very near future the dire effect
of militarism. The request , for
250,000 men frcm the managers ol
the oampaign In the Philippines,
einoe MoKinley's re-election, comer1
in Btrange oontrast with the prom
ise made a few seeks ago that tbe
rebellion would cease if Bryan was
defeated.
The Southern Paoiflo Co. has
just issued and will spread broad
cast a beautifully ezoouted folder
devoted to the state b( Oregon. A
map of tbe .state, 18x20 Inches,
covers an entire aide of the folder
portraying the location of tht
counties, lakes, rivers, mountain"
and cities and routes of travel;
while the reverse side is devoted to
oonoise descriptions of the resource
and productions ol the entire elate
A nuuiltcr of carefully oouipiled

tive matter. As a means ol adver

Our sister state of Washington
has a horror in tbe killing of a man
and bis wife, shot to death at night
in their farm cabin from a window.
Strong circumstantial evidence
caused tbe arrest ot a young man
for the crime. Robbery was tbe
motive, although tbe murderer se
cured nothing for his horrible deed,
Tbe arrest and conlession ot tbe as
saeeio throw light on a somewhat
similar murder committed in the
same nigbborbood, Castle Hock,
Cowlitz county, abjut a year ago.
Man is not always as smart as he
thinks he is. 1 For instance the
state bounty law on coyote scalps
for the protection of tbe sheep in
dustry has caused tbe killing of
many thousand coyotes on Eastern
Oregon plains.' Result: Farmers
complain that since the coyotes
were i binned out squirrels, gophers
and field mice have beoarce very
numerous sad destructive. The
repeal of the coyote scalp bounty
law by the next legislature will be
urged. '
Official resignations eon etime
oocurs. County Judge Lyons of
Douglas county, with two years and
a half of his term to serve, has
wearied of tbe cares of office and
placed hie resignation in tbe bands
of Governor Geer, "the appointing
power. ; S. '.
What will the commander of
the Kentucky do if the Sultan of
Turkey does not, have the mission

Cold Steel or Death.
'Theie Is but one small chanoe to
save your life and that is through an
operation," was tbe awlul prospeot set
before Mrs I B Hunt, of Lime Ridge,
Wis, by her doctor after vainly trying
to cure ber of a frightful ease of atom
uoh trouble and yellow jaundice. He
didn't count on tbe marvelous power
of Electric Bitters to cure Stomach and
Liver troubles, but she heard of It,
took seven bottles, was wholly oured,
avoided surgeon's kalfe, now weighs
more and feels better than ever. It's
positively guaranteed to cure stomach,
liver and kidney troubles, and never
disappoints. Price 60o, at W L De-
