How many of the hundreds of thouaanda who have sung, or lis tened to the singing of"There' i Light in the window for Thee, Brother," know that the author thereof Bleeps in a pauper's grave? The Rev Edward Dunbar, who wrote tie hymn, rests beneath the sod at Coffey villo, Kaunas, where be died a tramp in the town jail 10 years ago.., , In, .1867 Dunbar was arested at '.Leavenworth, Kansas; while engaged, in holding a , series of meetings, -and taken, to Min neapolis, Minnesota, where he was tried lor bigamy, oonviateU and sent to the penitentiary 1 for thret years and eight months. His name became a by-word in 'the plaoee where he was known, and leavirfj prison be), became a Vagabond. ' One night irfthe spring of 18 Dunbar applied at.jhe.. Cuffeyvillt jail for lodging. Some church people lately have erected a marble slab over his grave, on which, these . words -:ttfe inscribed: Here lies Edward DUnbair.wli( wrote 'There's a Light In the Window for" Thee, Brother."' LIKED DETROIT NIGHTS. i. It has come to pass that the writings of Mark Twain are not ap preciated as thoy should , be. An old bewspnper man . tells a good one that happened to himself in connection with the great humorist. The scene is laid In Detroit where Mark wsb to lecture. The news paper man, tben a young reporter, was assigned an interview with Mark. Here is his aocount: "I found the humorist Btandinc before the tire pi ace, smoking a pipe ana attired in a 1 suit of pajam as, ins appearance startled me, lor 1 didn't dream that he bad had time to undress, and I promptly lost my few remaining shreds ot Belt expression. All my questions flew out of my brain like a scatter ing covey of quail, and absolutely the only tiling ( oould think of asking him was how he liked the town. Ue looked at me quiixically. 'Considering that I arrived alter dark,' ho drawled, 'and was driven direct to the theater, and then di rect to the hotel, my Impressions are favorable. 1 think you have a very good quality ol uightt in De troit,' he addtd after a pan bp. ; 'fully equal to the nights I have encountered nnywhere.' " ' THE PEOPLE WILL PAY. Prosperity came to the Alabama iron mining-industry coincident with that renlfotiorj of President MoKlnlefi Oo Friday of last weak an advauoe of 25 cents, a (on was made, one dollar per ton in all QCCCQCCCOCCCOCCOOOOOOOOOOO since the presidential election. . Tbeee mine-owner have not ad vanced the price f labor one cent, have not been pot to any addi- tionatax pense In operating tbeii mines and smelting works, yet make the "prosperity" cry an ex cuse for robbing the consumers by an unjustifiable advance, people will pay the bills. . When the last hair on the dog's, tail can wag the tail and the rest of the dog tben Don 'JM Dickinson, Cleveland's postmaster - general and a few. more of bis standard rpf Democraoy, may ' reorganise the Democratic party. However the vote cast for Bryan is sufficiently large to convince any thinking parson that there ia no immediate, press ing need of snob reorganization as the party would get from Dickin son and his comparatively few fol lowers. - The Salem Journal clips a spite ful notice about undue attention be ing paid 1 football in the , State University paper. It hap pens that -the. Salem college institution, , ' Willamette Uni versity, has fallen so far to the rear among Northwest colleges that it lacks material even for a second team. Hence these tears. Tbe "dour grape" story again. In poetry it reads "tbe beautiful snow. In stern, praotical, evfrv day life it ia spoken of as "that ioo Reward. We, the undersigned hereby agree to pay the sum set opposite our respec tive names as a reward for the', arrest and conviction of a felony and sentence to - tbe - penitentiary of reform school of anv Demon or rjer- aons that is found stealing, shoplifting or purloining goods of any kind from any Store In Eugene, Lane cotrhty, Oregon.
