The following le' er from the Phil ippines, written by Jesse B Lawrence, bugler of Company K, Thirty-fifth Infantry, U 8 V, to Chas Griffin, will be read with Interest not only by Sec ond Oregon men, but by tbe many friends of Bugler Lswrenoe, who is a Eugeuo boy. It is one ot tbe best letters the Guard baa ever published from the islands: San Miguel, Aug 21, 1000, "As you see by the beading I am sta tioned at San Migasl de Mayumo. San Miguel baa a population of about 21,000, and is sBld to be next to Manila. Some of the companies of tbe Second Oregon were through tbls town in one of their campaigns, but I do not know what companies. We are about 22 miles from Malolos. "In reaoblng Manila our regiment took tbe train as far as Ban Fernando, and came to this place. When we reached here there was not a gu-gu to be found. Tbls Is supposed to i e on the nortb firing line. Of couise we were very much disappointed, for then all tbe lighting was on tbe south line. But now we have our share and per haps more. Finally they vera driven to the mountains, where, with tbe number of American soldiers that can be had, they are sale. Of course we cau drive them from their positions whenever they make a stand, but they always find a way to retreat. T.iey will never stand unless their number of men la double ours. They will not be satisfied unless tbey bave their freedom. "I have held conversation with some ef the smartest men in this tewn, lu which I bave asked them why tbey still fight against tbe Amerioans when tbey know it is impossible to whip them. "Their reply has been this: Until tbe election in the United States for president we only inteud to keep a small body of men organized to barrass or torment the Americans, just to let them know that they are still resisted by tbe Filippinos, and tbat we, the Filippinos are fighting for our inde pendence.'
