surprise. Although the press bad been
rather favorable to them, there was
some disposition here to take them on
probation; and tbe audlenoe at tbe
matinee was, though fairly large, by
no means equal to the crowded house
of the evening. The matinee sbow
bad established tbe Beaoh A Bowers'
minstrels In favor In Butte, and Ihs
evening attendance was tbs harvest of
the goed showing In ths afternoon.
Throughout tbe entertainment Is
smooth. It Is good everywhere, yet
there are features that are exceptionally
fins. There Is no halt in ths perform
ance; It really gives one tbe Idea of its
being "well bred." Tbe beslolnb
swinging that has been eeen here for a
long time Is that by Loa Knstzer; Dsn
Gordon's bloyole riding oould hardly
be better, and It is very quaint. Tbs

nist, gave valuable aid to tbe program.
The program was arranged to Include
tbe work of various oomposera. The
earliest bslng Handel, 1686-1760, and
tbs latest, Jobann Strauss, 1826-1603,
Sohubsrt, Sohomann, Cbopln, Liszt,
Beethoven, Bach and ethers were also
in the list.
Tbe program was one of the best ever
given here, and was reoeivtd wltb ap

Monument for Charnel Mulligan
Fountain for Second
Oregon Dead.
At the time of tbe dedication of tbe
Laneoounty court bouse resolutions
were psssed reoommendlng that tbe
county oourtereot a suitable monument
over the grave of Charnel Mulligan,
who, with Eugene Skinner donated
land for the county square. Tbe board
aoted in compliance with the resolu
tion and the monument ordered was
received today by W W Martin.
Tne emblem is of Vermont granite,
having a base of the same material, all
of whloh will b3 mounted on a sub
stantial foundation ot native stone,
After the appropriate lettering bai
been done the monument will be
plaoed in position over the grave ot the
departed pioneer in the I O O F ceme
tery near Springfield.
Mr Martin hi a practically closed ar
rangements for the erection of a me
mortal fountain to the Seoond Oregon
Lane county dead, in tbe city park,
which worthy move was inaugurated
and baa been carried to a successful
end by the W R P L. This drinking
fountain will be nearly seven feet wide
at the bate having two square marble
pillars on either side and rising above
tbe marble receptacle which will re
ceive the flow of water from a faucet
above. Suspended above tbe pillars on
artlstio metal work will be placed a
light.
Oo tbe sides of tbe pillars will be
engraved tbe names of tbe Lane ooun
ty boys who died In tbe Philippines.
