A Large Junket Party Nearly Met Death on Pike's Peak. Chicago, Oct 11. A special to the Times-Herald from Colorado Springs, Col, says: Pike's Peak was the scene of a thrilling and desperate adventure that befell the delegates to the Nation al eouveutioD of undertakers. The party, Including many of the wives of the delegates, and In alt over 200 stroog, bad a narrow escape In a terrific storm that swept over the mountain side. Many of the weaker persons Were partially overcame by the cold and blinding snow. When at an elevation of 10,001) teet the engine of the cogway train became disabled, The weather was fine and no one objected to finishing4 tee trip afoot. But in less than a mile they were overtaken by a furious blizzard. The situation was growing dangerous, when a relief came from a train sent for the purpose. Several of the women tainted darlug the storm. It Happened in a Drug Store. The Albany Acetylene Gas dent. cci- The Albany Democrat of yesterday, Ooi 11, gives full particulars of the fatal acetylene gas explosion which occurred lu that olty yesterday, a tele graphio account of which was pub lished In the Guard. The Democrat taya: "Steven Stoltx, the plumber, of Ferry street, and Fred Beis, the saloon keeper, this forenoon went dowu into the basement under Rels' saloon to take out an old adet-yleue gas tank when au accident occurred, resulting la the death of Stoltx aud serious injuries to Rels. Mr Rels at one time llghud bis place with aoetyleue gas, having the tank In the ground beneath the build ing. A year ago be took the plant out In order to use electricity, leaving the tank. It was supposed that the tank was empty,1 but the dampness of the oellar had generated the gas, and wheu the men were taking oil the top of the tank, there Was an awful explosion and the men were thrown some dis tance. Mr Bel was able to reach the sidewalk through the side door and secured help to bring Stoltx out. It wasfoundtuattheauxilary artery under Stoltx' left arm waa completely shat tered and he soon bled to death, living only a short lime. Rels' injuries were not so serious, though bss face was badly cut up and bruised, evidently the side of tne tauk hitting him, while a sharp part of the top etruok Stoltx. "At the time of the aoflldeut three men were carrying wood Into the base ment and also assisting In carrying some of the acetylene gas plant up stairs Stnllz had his left arm on the tank and was bending over working at a pipe whloh he waa unloosening, while Mr Reis was a little back of blm. The oandle was on the tank. Mr Rels oried out that he was killed, but Stoltx never made a cry. One of the men waa knocked against the wall by the oonoussion. A six luoh post was knooked down." ' Declines the Presidency. San Francisco, Oct 11. Tbe Ex amluer say this morning: "Edwin Hawley, of New York, has been offered and has declined tbe presidency of the Southern Pad do Company." According to the Examiner' state msut, Mr Hawley declined for the reason that be oould not aflord to sac rifice blB Eastern interest by moving to San Frunoisco. He Is said to have been offered a salary of $10,000 per annum. New York, Oct. 11. Wisconsin's Trial Trip. The battle-ship Wisconsin made her trial trip at Santa Barbara, California, yesterday. On iO mile of the course Sri average of 0.12 miles per hour was maintained.
