Damaged Bridge.
The county bridge over the Coast
Fork is unsafe for travel, and notices
have been posted to tbat effect. Yes
terday H V Mathews, of Goshen, In
formed Judge Klncaid tbat some of
the stringers had given way and that
the bridge bad careened over to one
side. During tbe day he received tbe
same information from several other
sources. As it is essential to plaoe tbe
bridge in good condition at once the
Judge sent A N Striker to view the
bridge and make a report. At present
the people of the Pleasant Hill country
and upper Willamette are crossing the
river at tbe ford below the bridge.
I bis bridge has a apan of 200 feet
and cost the county about $13,000.

Godfrey Hickathler, an aged Ger
man, residing on Olive street, was
found dead In bed about 3 o'clock this
afternoon, and Acting Coroner O A
Wintermeler was summoned. Death
was evidently from natural causes, so
no Inquest will likely be held. He
leayea two sons, Henry, who lives
about seven miles wsst nf this olty,
and John, residing at Wost Lake,
Idaho, aiso three daughters, Mrs
Therese Martin, Tillamook oointy,and
Mrs Keller and Mrs Flnok, Portland.

One Game Arranged to Be Played
in Eugeue So Far.

a harder time trying to book games

tbe manager of the Albany college
team atating that be will not be able

therefore cannot arrange a date, Oot.

The Balem Journal of yesterday,
states that a team uf tbe Capital City
Atbletio Club would play the U O
Oot. 27, but letters received by Mr
Goodrich so far fail to confirm this. It
is to be hoped this game will be ar
ranged, as many good players are
listed In tbe Balem team and tbe game
would prove an Interesting one,
Ofsoursetbe big games, two with
the Multnomah club and the Califor
nia universities are still on, but none
of them will be played In this city.
Coach Kaarsbeig is keeping the men
aetlvely at work and the thorough
drilling Is having a good effect. Team
play is improving rapidly. A number
of the players are out for a few days,
whlcb has a slightly depressing effect,
but this will soon be overcome, and all
will be in their places again. Ed
wards, quarter, was laid out and will
be off tbe gridiron for several days yet.
Scott, who took bis place, was laid out
yesterday, and may not be cut for
several days. Gorrell, the speedy end
may be out for a day or two, The sec
ond team men are tilling in however,
and the tw teams line-up .each night
for rapid work. A good many will
probably go to Portland to see tb
game Nov. 8.

tober 27, with the Salem Athletic Clnb
team, to be played In ibis olty. From
tbe long list of experienoed players In
the Salem olub a contest close and ex
citing Is assured. The Balem boys
have the ambition to develop one of
tbe best, if not the best team in the
state, and will put up a strong and
speedy battle. This will unquestiona
bly be the best game to be seen in Eu
gene during the year.
Killed at Tacoina.

Joseph J Kendall, of Albany, was
atruok by a train near Tacoma, Friday
and waa taken to the Fanny Paddock
hospital at Tacoma, where he died
Saturday morning at 9 o'clock.
Joseph Kendall was born in LIdd
county 36 years ago and made bis home
In Albany for maoy years, where be
was rightly respected by all who knew
him. He was a member of the Mason-
lo and Workmen lodges of Albauy,
also of tbs Brotherhood of Railroad
Firemen. Ia tbe latter two he carried
insurance polloies to the amount of
13,600. Mr Keadall bas been em
ployed as engineer and fireman on
this coast for a number of years and
was acting fireman on the work tralD
running out of Taoouia.
Deceased leaves a wife and two chil
dren. The funeral took place In
Albany today, the Masonlo and
Workmen lodges In charge, and tbe
remains were laid to rest in the Mason
to bnrial grounds.

tion.
The Christian ohurcbes of Lane
county, will hold their regular annual
county convention at Cottage .Grove,
Oot. 25-28tn. It la expected that all
tbe oburches. Hundav schools, and
Endeavor societies will send delegates
to this convention.

The Salem Journal has this to say of
the organization:
"A coach is being eeoured and the
football team will be ready for a game
with Eugene on the 27th of this
month. Al ba ly and Multnomah
clubs want games and will be atked to
play return games at Balem. The
teams from the Wouud cities will also
be invited to visit the capital olty and
the season of sport promises to be
lively.
