John Cogswell, of this city.

the state medical board. From 1886 to

of Governor Geer the at.nual report of
tbe Institution for the year 1899-1900.
"I am gratified at the outset to be
able to reajort that tbe year just closed
has been one of the most prospeious
and satisfactory lo the history of the
University. The unfortunate dlesen
elons which so much Impaired lu use
fulness a few years ago have brsn en
tirely removed, and the president and
faculty, as now oonstitused, are work
ing harmoniously and zealously for
tbe education and advancement of tbe
young men and women under their
eharge. Doctor Btrong, who was oauea
to tbt presidency about a year ago, has
taken bold of tbe work with an enthu
siasm and intelligent grasp of affairs
wblob promise well for the future and
tbe-etteot of whioh Is already apparent.
In the reorganization of the Univer
sity, he has laid broad foundations fot
future development and progress, so
that, no matter whether tbe growth be
fast or alow, no matter what courses or
departments may have to be added or
substraoted, the general plan of reor
ganization will not have to be altered
for many years. Tbe discontinuance of
tbe lower preparatory grades has
made tbe Associated Students a b.dyof
earnest young men and women. W ith
an able president, a learned (acuity,
and euoh a class of students, the Uni
versity Ia beginning to fulfill the pur
pose of Its organization."

"The largely increased attendance
at tbe present time October, 1900
being about 6U per cent over that of
last year, and the consequent demauds
upon the teaobing force and for greatly
increased library and laboratory fa-
oilitiri, make tbe present income of
the University very inadequate. If
Its standing and usefulness aro to be
maintained, and it is to keep pao
witb the general educational progress
of the state, additional legislative aid
in Its support is imperative. A ceutral
heating, light and wa'-;r station is
very muoh needed, both aa a matter ot
convenience and economy: At pres
ent, the six buildings on the Universi
ty campas are each heated separately;
some by ordinary heating stoves, oth
ers by hot air furnac 3, and others
again by steam or hot water. Aa a
