Professors Kultou and Bkeltou re
turned Wednesday from the Bohemia
mines. They brooght back a large
quantity of ore specimens and made
arrangement for securing otber ma
terials from the mines for use in the O
A C'a Bchool of Mines. Tbe samples
secured, when spread out, aresufllclaut
to cover sn area fourteen font square.
Borne of them are very fine. One prece
assays $12 per ton. It is from a newly
discovered mine that promises great
returiu. Tbe vein was found but a
few weeks ago. Another specimen
assays $3,000 per ton.
The Bohemia mines are located forty
miles east of C'nttago Grove and are
very dlfllcult of access. They are at an
altitude of 6,250 feet. Tbe peak In
wbicb tbey are located la 6,800 feet
blgh. Tbe district Is twelve miles
sijuare, and tbe deposits are so well
marked that they can, In many in
stances, be traced for miles. The
great body of the ores make an average
yield of about 2G per ton. Tbe chief
drawback Is the lack capital and
transportation facilities. Alter tbe
ores are concentrated, It costs $10 per
ton to get tbe produot transported
to tbe railroad at Cottage Urove. It
coats an additional 5 per ton to haul
it to the smelter at Tacoma. There an
additional $5 for smelting foots up a
round 20 per ton that the miners
must pay, to say nothing of the ex
pense of getting the ores out of the
mountain.
The biggest mine in the camp has
six tunnels, all of them a tbousaud feet
or more into the mountain. The ores
lu all the mines are rloh In minerals of
many kinds, and In time will be sure
to become paying properties. Of the
permanency of the camp there is no
daubt.
The college men were received most
kindly by the miners, and were
aflorded every faolllty for pursuing
their investlaatlona. This is seen in
the fact that the samples brought home
toO AC, all donated by tb miners,
represent an aggregate value of about
fJOO. Profs rikelto and Fulton leave
at once for Bumpter, where they will
continue their work In the mines of
Baker county.

Jiert Jennings arrived homey wier
lay afternoon from t'ape Nome, where
he went two months aito with the
crowds eager for gold in Urge quanti
ties. C P Lewis, of Rosehuri, also a
returning gold hunter, stopped oil
here to visit a brother a day or two on

Mr Jennings tells much the same
story as others who have relurued
from the north. The bubble burst
with a suddenness which s'.arned
every laboring man who expected to
realize money from labor, h- claim

ists. He tells again the story that
there are many men in Nome who

Islands, wriies the folio ing letter to a
friend in Euseue:

We have been stationed at Ban Mi
guel for about four m nilis aud no tell
ing bow many more months we will
stay here. I am satisfied, though, as
tho re Is a nice cool creek running by
our iiuariers.
Tbeie are three com psu-es stationed
here I, K and L. If a large body of
Filipinos should get, enough courage
to make .an attack, two-thirds of us
would be killed before we would have
time :o realize what had happened,
ti ll there Is not much danger. Last
ulgbt we beard firing to tbe north of
us.
There Is no fighting volng on now.
I doubt if we ever see any m ire fight
ing; the war is all over. However, we
are all very anxious lo see a good
scrap. We have had a few skirmishes
but nothing lo speak o .

full ot beautiful caves aud I have beeu
lu a good many of tbem.
I am feeling fine now; in fact I
never felt betier in my life. A persou
cau feel well one day and neit day be
down with tbe fever. Five weeks ago
I was down wi b tbe fever. My tem
perature was 104 for two days but we
have some very good doctors here and
II doesn't take them long to break up a
fever. Jesse Lawrence came out of the
hospital gome time ago and he looked
very poor but baa Improved a great
deal.
It Is so bot here that the sun bolls
I lie bacon grease out or us and it stands
on our faces like perspiration.
I muBt tell you what we bad for our
Christmas dinner. Bacon, hardtack
and eo (lee. KcUu.ec extravagant, isn't
it? Bui it's tbe actual truth. There
is hardly a man In the regiment but
wishes he were in tbe U 8 again.
What good is It for us to tie here?
There is no figtuing, nut some day we
may run onto It and then we may get
all e want and more too, perhaps.
Last week all of my company went
out ulue miles east of here to some
sulphur springs for their health and
a rest. ,
The otber day four of our boys went

they said that as they were going
along they uamu upou four dead natives
lying under a cocoa nut tree. Of
course we inquired what killed tbem
and tbey nald the water In tbe coaco
