Tke Mountain Dealer Objected to at Fall For llellKioua llessons, "That reminds me Indirectly," said the other drummer, "of a yarn I heard lately over In South Carolina told at the expense of a peculiarly guileless old chap who keeps a little crossroads store up In the mountains. Everybody wears boots in that part of the country, and, as the story goes, the old fellow had been buying his stock for many years of a manufacturer in a big city not 1,000 miles away. He paid $0 a pair for his boots when he first went into business, and the maker had con tlnued charging him the same figure year after year regardless of the fact that the market price had been steadily going down. The old storekeeper, se cluded from the world In his mountain home, never dreamed that he was be ing fleeced and took pride In paying his bills with clocklike punctuality. "At last, when that grade of boots was quoted at $2.50, the manufactur er's conscience smote him, and he de cided to make amends. So he wrote the country merchant, saying that there had been a considerable decrease In the price of leather, and be was glad to state that he would be able to let him have the last lot of boots be order ed at $4 a pair. This, he added, was a special low rate, made on account of personal esteem and the fact that be had been a regular customer for snch a long period. A few days afterward the conscientious manufacturer was amaz ed to receive a letter running some thing like this: 'Dear Sir It's mighty kind of you all to offer to let me have them boots st 94. but ! wish you would pleass keep the pric, the ami aa what It was before. I have been sailing them boots for flu a pair for IS yean, and, being a deacon la the church, I don't think it would be right to tax, no stronger profit. So no more st present from, yours truly, Parra Doi." New Orleans Times-Democrat. THE PALACE WAITED. A Bntlder'a Sngareatlon That Chang ed the Plana of a Pope. At a time when there was great suf fering among the people from lack of food and when famine In Its worst form was threatened Tope Alexander VI had made arrangements for the erection of a magnificent palace. The best architects had been employed, and the plans had been submitted and ac cepted, and an accomplished builder had been sent for to come from Venice, a man whose work bad won for him re nown and who was known to bo a Just and upright man. The builder had arrived, and at an appointed time he waited upon his ho liness to receive the plans nud make his estimates. "There Is one thing yet to be done," said the pope. "There has been no proper Inscription or legend thought of to be placed over the main entrance of the palace. It should be put above the great gate. You have had experience. Do you think of an Inscription that would be appropriate?" "If your holiness would pardon me for the liberty, I might suggest one most appropriate at this time." "You are pardoned In advance," said the pope, smiling. "Now, what shall It be?" "Sovereign pontiff, let It be thus: 'Command that these stones bo mado bread!' " The pope was visibly and deeply af fected. He paid the builder munificent ly for his expenses of coming and go ing, and Instead of building his palace be fed the hungry ones of his children. In its day. 11, iw the cop per did wink and glitter In the lire light! Away up In the Mainu woods a fanner who could not henr the thought of giving the shoemaker all he earned took an old copper washhoiler and cut It Into strips, which he fastened on tho toes of tho boots of Klhrklge and lil mer, Ellsworth and Eddie. "There now!" said lie. "Less see you git through them iu a hurry. Laws! I never see boys so bard on 6hoe leath er!" It was a bright idea, and tlio tnoro ho thought about it tlio moro it was homo In on him that It was n bright idea, no got a patent on it. Elhrldge and Elmer, Ellsworth and Eddie wero kind of ashamed to be seen in their copper toes at llrst, but when tho other boys all crowded around them at the district school and said: "Gosh! Woosht my pa would fix my boots that way I" they felt more comfortablo and rather happy. From that it went on till, for the sake of peace and quietness In tho house. If for no other reason, fathers had to buy copper toed boots for their boys. The Maine farmer got rich and had pie three times a day and moved to town and had a haircloth sofa in the front room and a marble topped center table with wax flowers in a glass case on it and everything that heart could wish. But foolishness Is bound up In tho heart of a child, and It Is part of his na ture to be hard on shoes.
