"Said contract to go to the next to the lowest bidder" la the way that a focal building contractor would have , the closing sentence read In advertise ments for bids on any particular job. While speaking of the matter recently this 6 mo contractor said that if the truth were known nine out of ten of the lowest bids made are made through a mistake in the calculations of the bidder. "If the coutractor who gets the Jut was aware that his bid Is oftentimes f 1,000 below that of the one next abova him, aud this on a comparatively small Job, be would immediately Institute a search and find where he had 'nario the mistake, thus having an opportu nlty of falling to qualify to couipleto the Job. This privilege Is often denied the bidder, however, and he gels well along with his work beforo tho fact Aawns upon him that he Is on a losing venture. It Is then too late to go back on the job, and tho result is that the party who Is doing the building and the contractors also are losers, and this because of the natural Inclination of the contractor to Bhlrk In order not to lose any more than he Is absolutely obliged to In order to get out on tbo bad deal. "These mistakes are not only disas trous to the parties Immediately con cerned, but to the trade In general, as by the error of the unlucky bidder an other worthy contractor is unable to get the work at reasonable figures. Give tho work to the next to the low est bidder, 1 believe to be n good gen eral rule." Omaha World-Herald. Hla Oaljr Conandratu, The old pilot of the little steamer Maid of the Mist, which used to carry passengers quite up to the foot of tho fulls of Niagara until the mist from the fulling waters drenched the clothing of every one on board, used to perpetuate one solitary conundrum each trip, lt always commenced and ended the same. Moving his hand along the sides of the pilothouse and examining the wood work minutely, he would look up mys teriously and remark: I say, stranger, do you know what this boat Is made of?" Made of? Wby, pine and oak, Isn't she?" "No, sir." "Hemlock r "No." "Tlsn't cedar. Is itr "Oh, no!" And then the old pilot's eyes twin kled and his mouth whistled a crazy tune. 'Well, Iron perhaps?" No." 'What In thunder Is she mado of, then?" She's Maid of the Mist, stranger; Maid of the Mist." Then the pilot accepted his morning cigar. Re Wii Very Charitable. An amusing story Is told in connec tion with a swell bazaar held a short time ago. Among the features of the entertainment was a refreshment stall, to which charitable donors contributed supplies, thus enabling all tho takings to represent clear profits. The lady In chnrgo requested a gift for this purpose from a well known aud wealthy gentleman in tho city, but ono not famous for "parting." To her surprise she received next day a note to the effect that he was sending her a sirloin of beef and "two" ox tongues. The same morning the lady happened to go to her butcher (who was also the butcher of Mr. X.), and, after giving him a large order for her stall, asked him if ho would like himself to give anything. "I should very much, ma'am," replied the worthy tradesman, "but I yester day gave to Mr. X., at his request for this purpose, a sirloin of beef and three ox tongues." Net gain to Mr. X.; Ono ox tongue and a cheap reputation for charity! London Standard. . X Cable With m HletOTT. Evans nar rates the null exploit of an over sanguine hour hunter: A venturesome Yankee cniueto Snu- , ta Knrbaru some years ago and soon I became an adept at throwing the lasso. Ueariug tho Mexican cowboys talk of lassoing the grizzly bear, ho decided to show them what he could do lu that line if he ever got a chance. (me day he eauie trpoii u grizzly in a favorable locality. Ho threw tho lasso with skillful aim and reined hack his trembling horse to give tho bear an astonisher, when tho reata which is always attached to tho pommel of the saddle came up taut. Tudgo of tho man's astonishment when that bear quietly assumed n sir ting posture, took hold of tho lasso and began to draw It lu hand over hand! Tho hapless descendant of tho pil grim fathers stuck to the horse and saddle until he saw the slack all drawn iu nnd the bear and tho horse coming rapidly together. Then, lu a panic, he descended aud ran for a tree, aban doning tho horse to Its fate. Two skillful men, operating from op posite sides, can master a bear and cuoko him between them, but with only ouo man, one horse aud ono bear, it Is another story. Sly Joking- In the l'ulplt. It Is the habit of tho modern time saving young man, says Eliot Gregory In Tho Atlantic, upon entering a quick lunch establishment to dash for tho bill of faro and glvo an order (If ho Is adroit enough to catch ono of the maids on tho fly) before removing either coat or hat At least 15 seconds may bo economized in this way. Once seated. the lunchcr falls to on anything at hand bread, cold slaw, crackers or catchup.
