Substantial Improvements Must
Be Made.

The (jueMtlon of building a good aud
vubstaullal road to the Blue River
mining district is being agitated, and
before any iutercat lit allowed to cease
tbe funds should be arranged fur aud
the work begun.
A proposition Is now on foot to
expend tbe sum of $5,000 on the road
from Eugene to the district. If this is
done it should be made into one of tbe
best pieces of road in the county, and
oneover which tbe heavy trafllclng of
the district could be safely carried on.

started out today with a paper seeking
the encouragement of the business
community, and will also present the
matter falrlyfto the board of county
commissioners. As stated yesterday
th ILInn county court has pledged
$5,000 to assist In buildlnga road to the
distriot from Brownsville, and Lane
county mutt aotatonce or lose thou
sands of dollars worth of trade. I'. Is
believed the businesa men will assist
an enterprise fraught with so much
benefit to themselves, and aid In tbe
development of the country.

claim in the new Mekenzie mining

The gentlemen are nil pleased with
prospects so fsr 1 expect to atirui t
much Interest that Mctiou. The
new district is west of Die Blue River
district and on a line with the Fall
Creek and Bohemia miulng districts.
The claims are about six miles in a
direct line from Wycofl's, on the Mc
Kenzle, but these irenttemen weut in
the last time from Thompson's aud
cut a trail along the Martin ridge fur
18 miles up to their camp. These gen
tlemen have located a group of ten
claims, all showing well-defined ledges.
Oiie of these they have opened on the
surface, the ledge showing a face 300
feet wide. The rock Is ol good char
acter, and indicates that much can be
expected from the further development
of the property. The active develop
ment of these claims will continue,
and if the xpected values are shown,
a flve-eiaiiip mill will probably be put
iu tbis fall.
A number of other parlies are local
ing In this neighborhood, and the find
ing of ore formations here only indi
cates what has long been suspected,
that the entire ruuge of mountains has
mineral ores of good values. That this
sectiou will be one of tbe milling
centers within a compara lvely short
time, Is now more than ever apparent.
Teachers' Institute.
The teachers institute which begin
at the court house Monday, July 30,
1000, promises to be of uuusual interest
' and benefit to the teachers attending,

threshed 100 bushels from the Held
and abandoned the rest, as it was too
poor to harvest. Jonathan used to
farm In the Palouse, where 40 bushels
to the acre was an average crop, and
naturally felt a little disgruntled over
the poor yield this season.
