San Francisco Argonaut. A Very Restful Hut. Adolf Menzel, the German artist, was at one time engaged on a mural decoration. Ho had rigged up a scaf folding in his studio, on which his model was requested to Btund. For two long hours the poor "poseur" stood up aloft In a most fatiguing posture. Menzel In the meantime worked at his sketch, heedless of the fact that his model was growing tired. At length the model found it necessa ry to Bpeak. "Ilerr professor," said he, "how about a recess?" Menzel apologized profusely for his forgetfulness. "Certainly, certainly, my dear sir," said he. "Come down and rest yourself a bit." The model had clambered from the scaffolding to the ladder, which led down from It to the studio floor. "Stop!" cried tho artist suddenly. "That poso is fine! Don't move a muscle!" And once more the model was forced Into strained rigidity, while the en thusiastic draftsman set about sketch ing him. At the end of half an hour Menzel looked up from his work. Editor Goabd: Iu order to oorreot some errors appearing iu the Goakd of June 80. 1 ask for a small apace in your paper to correct aaid errors ap pearing' In an article headed, "More Early History." The first error was made as to tbe date of the settlement of LoBt Valley by giving it as 1863, by Win Julinathau and Palsy Morgan. Then the writer submits what he says Is a correction by saying the settlement was begun in 1852, not 1853, by William, Jonathan and Palsy Morgan, three brothers, and not "Wm Johna thau aud Palsy Morgan." Now the fuels are PatBy Morgan was widowed daughter of Johnalhan Morgan, and William Morgan was a son-in-law of Johnatlian, and the three took the land named, and Mc- Dowel traded tbe laud now owned by S H Friendly, in Rattlesnake vulley to Johnatbau Morgan for bis Lost v 1 ley ranch. The others parted wtlh their laud as slated in the article As to the Gnsaet man, he held bis land until the Tall of 1858 aud sold ot to J B Hanna. About this tune Ij B itowland located the plaoa now owned by Wm and Nauoy Gi lllltli. Also one John Hurden took the luud now own d by J Vincent aud in 1868 Tbtimnn Matlha8 and Thomas Williams, with their families, located in Lost vallev. and John Stoops bought ol Wm Wish erd and located on land now owned by 8 Handsaker, and some time in the winter of 1853 aud 1854 James Parvln settled ou land in upper Lost Valley, but later abandoned It and located the land now owned by H Vincent. Campbell Chrlsman, of Cottage Grove, Captain Buoy, of Creswell, and Gilmore Calllson, of Pleasant Hid, were the gentlemen who made the addresses. McCarty was not present. Honor to whom honor Is due. The next bluuder Is In tbe statement of the building of tbe first saw mill by Messrs Rutledge, Est-p and Stoops, It was built by the first two named gentlemen. Stoops had tin hand In It. This we know, as we heip -d lo build the mill, and it was In 1858, aud not In 1865, as stated In tbe article. As to the 1863 Indian scare, tbe Hon T G Hendricks, of Eugene, was in the fracas.
