Francisco today. This afternoon he
went to Portland. All his family are
lu the metropolis, excepting Tberesn,
who is here. Rosalie Is quite sick, and
it Is feared an operation to relieve her

Lobt His Outfit. Last Friday a
gentleman by the name of Richie,
about two miles above Hill's on the
Middle Fork, concluded he would
ride down the river In his canvass
boat. He was a California tnuriii.
He placed bis two guuB in the boat, a
high priced shotgun and a rllle,
blankets, eta, and started out swim
mingly. In about 2)0 yards the boat
struck a large rook swamping it. The
tourist got out after a hard swim; the
two guns are gone forever; his boot
ruined, while his blankets were re
covered pretty well water soaked.

that ol cured meats. Tbey bave moved
a large barn on thn Iaac Gray, Br,
place. Eleventh and Willamette
streets, out on the street, and will use
this aa their place of business.
John B Gray, the manager, showed
a Guard reporter over tbe building
this morning It is well arranged for
the new industry, and already tho
firm is turning out a good grade of
cured hams and sides. The smoker is
large and will accommodate a large
quantity of meat, three layers or stories
of meat being placed In at onetime.
About 26 hours is the time requited to
cure one filling of the smoker. At the
present Gray A Hon are buying large
quantities of salted sideB and hams
from a dlstuuco, but they state that as
soon us the farmers of this county
realize that they call find a home
market for all the porkers they can
raise, the firm will begin to use all that
is offered them.
This Is an industry that is In its
infancy in tbe West, for annually
there Is imported into Oregon from
states as far east as Iowa large quauli
ties of cured meats. Messrs Gray A
Hon are starting In the business right,
and are carefully handling their
product. Tbey will sell direct to the
retailer, and in a Bhort time home
cured meats of the best grades can be
found on sale at all stores. This is a
move In tbe right direction, aud these
gentlemen will receive the eucourage
meut tbey merit in this enterprise.

this evening. He came here several
days airo, and bad frequently com

merly in business in Boise. He wa a
member of the Elks lodge, of Roseburg,
Oregon.
Tbe deceased came to Eugene sev
eral years ago, worked in tbe sash and
door factory for some time, nfterward
tended bar for Wm Bensbaw, and was
owner of tbe Hoffman Houee saloon
lor a time. He married a Miss Heinpe,
of this city, but she has been separated
from him for about four months, and a
suit for divorce la being Instituted by
her against him at Boise, Idaho. Af
ter selling the Hoffman House saloon
Mr West went to Boise, wbere be
has been in buslnes until recently
Nothing Is known of tbe life of Mr
West previous to his residence In
Eugene.

Rev. G. A. Blair Retires From
Cumberland Presbyterian
Church.

Rev G A Blair, who has been pastor
of tbe First Cumberland Presbyterian
ohur.'h for over six years, olosed his
connection with that churoh yester
day. He preached morning and
evening, and took leave of the mem
bers regretfully. When he tookoharge
there were but few .members, and the
first meeting was held in Hawthorne
Hall, on the corner of East Morrison
street and Union avenue, there being
but few present. He leavee the
church with a membership or about
200. A handsome building, oatiog
about $6000, was put uo, and with
the ground on East Twelfth street,
the property is free from debt. Mr
Blair tendered bis resignation on ac
count of the failure of his health Two
years ago he was compelled to take a
long vacation, but this time when he
felt that he was breaking down, be
went at once and filed bis resignation
At first the church asked that he re.
cull it, but Mr Blair feeling tbat the
Portland church should have a strong
