It Intended Visiting Eugene in
a Few Weeks.

"The Australian cirous, giving the
greatest and . randtst spectacular ex
hibition of aggregated wonders and
world startling performances, of any
similar concern upon the lerrestlal
globe, has come to grief. The small
boy l plunged In sackcloth and ashes,
and the melodious volceof the eloquent
vender of pink lemonade Is bushed for
the time being.
"It seems that the circus lias been
doing the coast country for several
weeks past, traveling by wagon up
from California. The concern reached
Gardiner In safety and gave Its usual
exhibitions there early this week
leaving Wednesday evening ou the
steamer Eva for Scottsburg, expecting
to play Intermediate towna enroute to
R'lseburg. Not all the outfit could be
loaded on the Eva and It was accord
Irmly placed upon a scow to be towed
up the river by the steamer. On this
scow were four wagoDa, eight hnraes,
tent aud other paraphernalia and
three employes. All went well until
just above the mouth of Dean Creek
when the scow suddenly went to the
bottom with all Its load. The tide
was bigb and the e were thirteen feet
of water In the channel when the dis
aster occurred. Prompt ellorts at res
cue resulted in the men and five horses
getting ashore, while the other horses,
which were tied to the wagons, were
drowned, and the complete outfit lost.
The members of the company were
mostly on the Eva, as were a span of
mules and a part of the circus prop
erly. . .
"The circus men say a hole in tlio
bottom of the scow was the cause of
the disaster, and that the Bteamboat
company Ib responsible for their loss,
Captain James Graham, of the Eva,
la at a loss to acoonnt for It from the

J Cornwall, of the Umpqua River
Navigation Co., met the wrecked
oircls at Scottsburg, as he waa return-
lug home from Han Francisco, and had
the members of the company and
their remaining goods taken Lack to

The circus had made arrangements
to visit Eugene during the next four
weens.

SERIOUS WRECK.
A Number of People Injured
Four Seriously.
Ashland, July 12. The southbound
passenger train on the Southern Pa
cific Co's railroad, which left Ashland
at 1:03 o'clock yesterday morning, met,
with a serious accident near Gibson, a
station 18 miles south nf Dunsmuir,
yesterday at 0 o'clock. '1 he rear Pull
man car jumped the track and rolled
down an embankment, injuring all of
the passengers in it more or less, while
four of them are reported as being serl
ously hurt.

the track rolled over and struck against
a huge rock, and continued down the
embaukmeul about 75 feet to (lie river
where it now lies a totai wreck.
Fortunately there was not a crowd of
passengers In the car at the time, and
while all of them were bruised more or
less, only four sustained senous Inju
ries. They are Mrs G A Pierce, back badly
hurt.

and collar bone broken.
Miss Morton, hand, wrist and arm
badly cut and lacerated.
John Aliuou, colored, .the porter of
the car, sustained severe Injuries to
his ohest.
The Injured passengers were taken
to Redding by the S f Co, and their
Injuries giveu strict attention.
The train was lu charge of Conduc
tor Hood.
The wreck occuired nt the same
place where two days previously seven
freight caisjumped the track aud were
dllolied.
