Mrs W H Abrams has received two very Interesting letters from her hus band, who, with their son Tom, is en route to Cape Nome, In all probability now at that point. Through the courtesy of Mrs Abrams the Guard is enabled to make tbe following Inter esting extracts: On Board Steamer Eanta Ana, June 3, 190U. J "There are about 460 passengers on board and accommodations fjr about one-half that number. Everyone Is good natured, so we get along all right. Tom has not been sick and is having a good lime on tbe trip. There are quite a number of women on board, some of them belonging to a variety troupe which is going to iiome for the season. "Last Friday webud quite an excite ment. Tbe ship, or rather tbe cargo, was round on fire. The officers kept it quiet as long as they could, but tbe smoke commenced pouring out of the bold, aud all the passengers found out what was the matter. Borne of the passengers were pretty badly frightened, and I guess most ell of them felt their hearts sink when they learned tbe facts, although all behaved very nicely. The officers were some time locating the fire, but finally found It among tbe baggage and freight. They fastened it all up tight as possible and then turned lu steam and water on It. Afterabout 24 hours they succeeded in putting it out. It burned very alow and did considerable damage. Yesterday they sent down and brought up on deck all the burned stud. It happened to be mostly groceries belonging to the variety company and they can stand tbe loss alright. They went all through (heboid when tbe fire was pastdanger, aud I for one feel thankful that It was no worse. Our trunks and tent prob ably got a good soaking, but we will not know tbe damage until we get to Nome. All our other freight including my tool chest, is on another steamer. We learned at the last moment that we could not take our freight on this boat, bo it went on another boat, and is accompanied by Captain Hatch, who Is also taking up some lreight. He will arrive at Nome, however, as eoou as soon as we will. Mrs Hatch and her sister and husband are on the boat. ,111,, iieu mo nre was discovered we were about 000 miles from the nearest land and with small boats sufficient to hold not over one half the passengers aboard, Vou can imagine what a horrror It would have been under lesB favorable circumstances.
