For a long time Oregon has felt the need of a strong govern' ing hand, and the makers of state have east abont for a Oiuolnnatus. The late election doveloped man; able and popular idols o( the people and brought them strongly to the fore. In the county of Multnomah, Robert D Indian's eleoVlon, to the state senate, iras almost unanimous. The votnrs who oast their ballots - for him were of no single political faith, They were democrats, re publicans, populists and partisans of other persuasion. Those electors who favored him are more than jubilant over the result ot their vic tory and see In Mr Inman an ideal candidate for governor two years hence. They point with pride to Mr Inman's career as a oivillan and In statecraft. lie has domonBtrated markod. ability as a financier While at Salem, as a representative, he easily scoured muoh valued and desired legislation for his conetitu ents. It Is quite generally believed and oonoeded that he was chosen mayor of Portland a few years ago, but was deprived of the deserved honor by iugglery of figures that con juring enumerators knew too well how to handle. Mr inman is an energetlo man. Admirers have oalled him one ol natures noblemen, despite the faot that he is not of the autocratic class that Is "bung 'round with strings and stuck o'er with medals'" He Is a self-made man and In the prime of vigorous manhood. He waa born in Iowa and crossed the plains in 1865 with an ox team. He reoelved a splendid eduoation in the rugged school of experience. At an early age he was thrown upon his own resources and labored at Weidler's Lumber mills in North Portland for several years. ' He was one of the Incorporators of the North Pacific Lumber mills, where he occupied a proprietary position until he sold h!. ownership and joined his foroos with the great milling oompany known to the business world aa Iuman, Paulson fc Co. Their plant waa once burned to the ground. Mr Inman has giyen profitable employment to a small army of men in bis bus-. iness oareer and is univnrially ad mired by those to whom he had heon a benefactor. Ha hag the unbounded confidence of the whole people of the stato, and, if ho can be induced to be come the democratic standard bearer in 1902 he will prove that he is the best piece (if Xjliticnl timber that ever graced the ihip oi etale. His probity is above ques tion. He is fbe soul of honor and he wears bis heart upon hid sleeve. His great ambition baa ever been to see Oregon takeajier place among the foremost Btates of the ui-ion. If Mr Inman can be induced to under take the governor task he will be paramount to all others who may be considered by the people along that line. The writer of this article does not know Mr Inman's views on this subject, but he does know that today be Is the most popular man in the state of Oregon, and that he richly deserve the dislino tion. lie was complimented with thejargest vote that was ever given any democrat in Multnomah county. Eight years' ag'i be was chosen to represont the county in the lower house at Salem. For 12 vears prior to that, no democrat had gone to the legislature from that oounty and for eight years since no democrat has tli.ua been honored, until Mr Inman again was oalled to the halls of state, with other staunch men of bis political faith. The Prohibition platform tolls why McKinley was elected as follows: "McKinley was eleoted by appeals to ChriHiino sentiment and patrolism almost unpre cedented, and by a cum hi nation of moral influence never seen before in this country." The people will not be fooled in the same way again, though the republicans have begun as reprehensible actios, and are doing their best to fool the people.
