An American traveler writing from Rome, May 25, describes the passage through StGotbard tunnel, which pierces the boundary AlpB between France and Italy, a won derful climatic transformation: As we neared St Gothard, it rained with an occasional flake of snow. All our wraps were needed, then BQffered from cold feet and limbs. Scarcely a ray of sunlight was seen for a number of hours. We entered the ereat tunnel from an air almost as dark as night, and emerged in sixteen minutes, run ning apparently ai iremenaous speed, into the bright and balmy air of Italy. Sucb a su lden trans formation can scarcely be imagineu, leBS described. Car windows were opened, and such exolamations of wonder as passengers looifeu out into the dear blue sky and upon the snow oapped mountains all about them with the green valleys far below. P.ld up Cash Capital 5 0,000 w Daughter of a Manchu Noble- Sold to a Wealthy Merchant Chosen Empress of China. Portland Telegram. The Dowager Empress of China, Tsi An, who is charged with bring' ing on the orieis now impending in ber empire, is the daughter of Manchu . noble, who, becoming bankrupt when she was a ohild sold her to a wealthy merohant of Canton. When in 1843 Emperor Hion Fung issued the usual proc lamation requiring eligible Man chu maidens to present themselves for examination as candidates for imperial concubines, Tei An went to Pekin with others., and was among the first ten ohoBen, That she had brains as well as beauty is proven by her success in soon seouring the espeolal attention and favor of first the empress, and then the emperor. It was an important event in her life when, the empress being child less, Tsi An presented the emperor with a son; for in oonBequenoe of this Bhe was proclaimed Empress of the "VeBt. Emperor Hien Fang died in 1800, and Tsi An's son beoame emperor as Tung Chi, the government being ootid uo ted by a regonoy, consisting of the two empresses and the boy's unolo. In 1874 Tung Chi, then 19 years old, Bought to control affairs himself, and bis mother promptly bad him poisoned, as well aB his wife and child. Kwang Su, a ohild four years old, was then proclaimed emperor, and soon after Tsi An removed her co-empress, Hien Fung's widow, by poison. Thus she was in complote control of the whole empire, east as well aB west Kwang Su grew up and assumed nominal control as emperor, but as soon as he began to exorcise au thority in fact, and contrary to Tsi An's wishes, he was dethroned and put into prison where he still remains, though why the dowager did not murder him !b not rx plained. Being of the Manchus, the em press is bated by the majority of the Chinese. She has directly murdered many, and it is supposed that, she holped to foment the Boxer uprising, not only to rid the country of the hated foreigners, but to croate an opportunity to kill off 1 The Pen in the Hand is worth two in the Mind. If you have "a good mind to write to Dr. Pierce" take pen in hand and ; begin. Theu you'll avoid the experience of Mrs. M. P. Davis, of Honaker, Russell Co., Va. She writes : "For seven years I was confined' to bed most of the time. I had ulceration of internal organs and female weakness. I had four doctors and they said I could not be cured After the doctors soul I could not be cured I wrote to Doctor Pierce for advice I followed tho Advice he gave ...I feel better than I ever did..' My friends say I do not look like the same woman. am sorry I did not take Dr. Pierce's medicine when t first began to have poor health. I could have saved what I paid to humbugs." No one ever regretted writing to Dr. Pierce for advice. . .Many have regretted not writing sooner.
