' It may not be generally known
that Miss May Dearborne, soprano
soloist of the Taylor street church,
enjoyed the distinction of receiving
many pretty compliments rrom
Nevada on the latter's recent visit to
this olty. Miss Dearborne had been
persuaded to seek an Interview with
the famous diva, in order to obtain her
opinion regarding the ultimate goal for
which she should strive in ber future
musical carear. Bhould It be concert
work or grand opera? The latter, In
her excssslve modesty, she hardly
dared hope for.
"Nevada, bright and dainty in her
French traveling gown, shook her
cordially by the band with so much
friendliness tbat she immediately fell
at borne. An aria from 'Traviata' was
selected, In wbloh to test her voice,
and Miss Dearborne sang it without
the flutter at the heart-strings she had
expeoted to struggle with under the
eyes of so celebrated a critic. JNevaaa
was delighted with the remarkable
purity and sweetness of her voice, and
expressed herself in no uncertain terms
regarding it to the young singer and
to Mrs W K Thomas, who accom
panied her, declaring emphatically
that her voice was admirably adapted
to grand opera. Bbe advised her by
all means to go to Europe for study,
and, after carefully trying her voice
by means of special exercises, told ber
tbat It bad not been injured In the
least by false methods of teaching, as
is so commonly the case throughout
America. Miss Dearboroe's voice is a
high soprano, having a range of three
octaves, the extreme upper limn
being F sharp above high C. During
the last few years i-he has been study
ing the leading roles In 'Faust,
Traviata' and 'Aids,' and Micaeua in
'Carmen.' "
Miss Dearborne will sing at the
recital given by Mrs Rose. M Hoi
lenbeck'a pupils at the First Christian
church Friday evening, June 29.

School Picnic. The school in the
Banta Clara district held ; a picnic
yesterday, closing the spring term. Mrs

ercises were of an interesting character,

dav was a very plersant one.

No Money.
A missionary lust arrived In New
York from India (June 26) gives the
following aocount of the terrible condi
tion prevailing there:
"When we left India on May 15
6,000,000 people were on the govern
ment relief list. On June 1 we ueaiu
that oholera had broken out. In
Ahmedabad, a place of 60,000 people,
v.r BOO died in the course of the week
before we started. When we lelt the
government was transferring 7000 or
8000 people from place to place because
of lack of drinking water, in my
station, where there are 40,000 people
there were only two wells lelt with
water In them. The people were
hauling water from wells sunk in tbe
beds of streams never before known to
go dry.
"Sine the last famine three years
ago the government engineers bave
discovered that the level of tbe water
In tbe ground has sunk 15 feet, which
is the cause of all tbe difficulty. Tbe
railroad engine at our place Is obliged
to go 15 miles for water. The railroad
oomoanles are building tanks and
hauling water from place to plaee.
Cholera, smallpox and diarrhoea
are now following tbe famine. We
beard at Genoa that there had been
floods at Bombay. Rains now would
be worse than the famine, for tbey
would cause grass and weeds to spring
np. The natives would seize upon
this growth as soon as It appeared
above the gronnd and ball and eat tbe
mess. Being in such a famished state
this would have a very disastrous
effeotupon them. There is plenty of
grain In the country, if the govern
ment would only put a little pressure
upon tbe greedy merohanta."
