We ffot not thlhk the' (ierman will "oall it ioi" however the eleo tlon may go thii fall. Then he" "will probably find out before he oalls his loan in that nearly one third of Germany's metallio money oon sists of silvsr, about a similar pro portion at in the United State. The Register might hare saved itself some humiliation for attempt ing to bunoo the' public with subh statement by previously consult ing statistlos of gold and silver circulation throughout the world. It would have found that however discriminated agrdhst the ' halls of leuiilationi at the behests - of oapl talistlo combinations, silver is "good over. sound money" the world THE ALAMO. No Messenger of Defeat The 192 TexWExchanged Lives With 2000 Mexicans, p rv There is nothing in American history more thrilling and heroic than the Texans defense of the Alamo Minion'.' Yet il there ' is nothing to oommemorate the' work of that noble band of 193 men who for six days held the fort against 6,000 Mexicans. There was w no messenger of defeat. The massacre was oom piste, but over 2,000 Mex icans were killed and no one knows how many more-irsn wounded before the last of the Texsns met his death. STORY OF THE MASSACRE. The defenders of the Alamo re fused all overtores for surrender, whlob they well knew meant deatb at the hands of the treacherous Mexioans. On March 6, 1836, at 4 o'oiook in the morning the attack was made.1 The , Mexicans moved In silence and reaohed Hie walls. Ladders were plaoed in position, and juet as the men reaohed the top there was a roar and a bail of bullets from the interior.' Men fell in solid files. Borne were shot and others clubbed to death. After 'a light of a half hour some Mexicans managed to reaoh the courtyard, and the previous fight was nothing to what took place. - The doors of the Alamo were barricaded with bags of sand neck high. Then came the battle, or lather massacre of the Alamo. Tbe Mexicans ad vanced and attacked the Alamo. The handful of Texans behind tbe bags of sand fought like devils. It was a hand-to-hand encounter. It was muzzle to muzzle, bowie knife to bayonet, musket to rifle. NO QUARTER ASKED OR OIVEN. The Texans resisted as only men with their lives in their hands oould resist. They abandoned one room only to make a stronger resistance in another. Finally a long room on the first floor was reached. This was the hospital, and there tbe fight was bloodieBt. Fifteen Texans killed 42 Mexicans on the threshold. The fiht lasted five hours. The last to meet death were Colonel Travis and Davy Crockett. When they fell every Texan had met deatb. The sight was a terrible one. The Mexioans bad 2,000 killed and 300 wounded An examination showed that every Mexioan was shot not below ' the neck, and those who were not sbot had been cut or clubbed to death, This showed the wonderful accu racy of the Texan fire. This is aboot the time of year when the bopbuyer braces tbe bop- grower up witn stories of snortage and better price proa pec ts for another season.
