has been elected to the office of county

The Fern and Flower Prcession.
Many of the great colleges for
women have, during commencement
week, some festival on the cam
pus through which the women of each
oollege desire to perpetuate somo tra
dition of their alma mater, or to show
forth some Dhase of the life that is
dear to under graduates.
Commencements occur in June
when nature is at her best and so these
festivals are usually out on the campus
and bright with flowers, college and
class oolors. Gay and beautiful page
ants they are on land and ou water
when lake or stream la part of the
cam dub. Sometimes long lines oi
seven or elgbt hundred college woman
carrying flowers, wearing symbolic
oolors and decorations, singing songs
to classes and buildings, giving college
cheers and calls, march over the cam'

pay some tribute, or at some hallowed
spot te lay a memorial.
At Smith College, in Northampton,
Massachusetts, a white-robed proces
sion winds across the campus on class
dav moruiug and masses on the
college steps for the ivy exersoiees,
At Wellesley there are two spring
time festivals, oalled "Float" and
"Tree Day." For tbe "Flout" a pro
coBsion of boats moves out across tbe
lake, while hundreds of students aud
alumnae, some arrayed in cap and
gown, are gathered on tbe shores. But
their choicest festival Is "Tree Day."
Tbe founder of Wellesley bade tbe
earliest classes set aBlde one day for an
outdoor college revel, when there la
the planting of trees with song and
ode, and the recognition of tbe symi a
thy between joyous human life and
nature. There has been a "Tree Day"
every year since 1877.
Tradition is strong in oollege life.
Busy men and women full of respond-
bllitles and honors, when they return
to their oollegea, love to find tbe same
old songs, festivals and ceremonies
they knew as under-graduates, and so
to live over the joy and enthusiasm of
youth.
The University of Oregon has tew
traditions. It has but two children
of alumni and no grand children. It
takes years to establish traditions.
Perhaps the oldest is the planting of
olass trees, and tall trees on the campus
will testify to something of tbe age of
theoustom. Tbe "Walk Around" is
auotber tradition which the seniors
feel bound to respect at tbe opening of
each year.
Tbe women of tbe University have
no festival peculiarly tbelr own. They
have neither ceremouy nor pageant.
They propose on June 12, from 7 to 8;3o
p. m., in the light of the setting sun,
and tbe moon, to Inaugurate a custom,
a procession of tbe women of tbe
University, who will march over tbe
level sward and gentle Blopes of tbe
campus, In and out among the peculiar
class-trees, on up to the entrance of
Villard Hall, where yearly they will
lay a tribute of flowers In honor of
their alma mater. Then tbey will
bait at the oaks where tbe senior
women will be tbe guests of honor,
This winding procession with all
nature for its setting will be a fitting
acoompanlment for the joiner celebra'
lions of the week. No campus is more
beautiful than our own. The setting
of the sky aud shlfliug llghis will be
as brilliant as tbe prooession itself.
Solomon, ln all his glory and wis
dom was not arrayed like one of these
college women. Home In robes or
wnite, or pale hues of fading sunset
skies, or in gowns of somber shades,
use tbe shadows cast by fires In
twilight. All will wear garlands of
flowers, woven in tbe balr or worn in
dainty wreaths or gay festoons, each
Just as fancy dictates. All will carry
In the baud, tied perhaps, with class
or college color a frond or two of fern
maideu-balr or tall, graceful brake or
sword, or any of tbe myriad varieties
of this fern-full Oregon. Each woman

of flowers and bearing ferns In their
