PLACES COUNTY CLERK LEE IN FAULT. The letter ol Hon. E. "W. Bing ham, ot Portland, regarding the construction that should be placed upon the duties of the county olork regarding registration of voters is a very strong indictment of County Clerk Lee. It is unanswerable, and plaoee the Lane oounty clerk In the discreditable position of having taken advantago of the merest technicality of law to evade per forming his duty in registering votors whom he undoubtedly thought were opposed to him politically. No other reason can be assigned for his autocratio dis regard of the rights of thirty of his follow citizens. Mr. Bingham's opinion should be conclusive to any reasonable man. He Is the author of the registration law, and to his efforts, more than any other man, or set of men, may be attributed the enactment of the law by ths legislature. It m di cuBeed for monlha jirviou to the meeting of tho leg elalur. aud tba experieuca of oilier state end coonlriea km drn upou iu the effort to secure the itsssge ol a law that would fully protect the ballot from illegal manipulation, while giving the greatest liberty and secrecy to the elector. We give the closing paragraph of his letter: "Section 13, directs the clerk to cloee bis registers at 5 o'clock - p. m., of May 15th. He should not register electors applying to him after that hour. But I would allow the preceding sections 5, 9 and 10 to control this provision to the extent above stated. That is, so that the clerk should receive and file and enter all such affidavits, provided they were mailed by the justice or notary 'forthwith' (say not later than the evening of May 15th) to him, or if they were for warded in like manner by mes senger." Attorney Kinsey took registra tions until 5 o'clock p m May 15th. He presented them to County Clerk Lee May 16th with the request that the names be entered upon the register. County Clerk Lee not only refueled to register the names, but went but of his way to insult the messenger. What answer will the people of Lane county give their autneratio servant Monday June 4tb? I no; this instance of his disregard of the rights of bis fellow citizens a suffi oieut reason why he should not be re-elected? AN INDIAN MEET. The Umatilla Indians have in vited the Nez Perces, of Idaho, to join them In a Fourth ol July cele bration that will last about a week' If the latter accept the invitation the celebration will be worth going a long way to see. Both tribes are wealthy, have splendid houses, and horse-raolng is a passion with the Indian. II he gets down to necea sity he will bet his favorite horse. or wife, the latter preferred as life would hardly be worth living with' out the horse. He could Hud i wife most any place on the reserva tion. The Eastern Oregon and Wash ington Indian, by the way, bears little resemblanoe to the depraved fiBh eating specimen that is seen along the coast, and in the Wil lamette valley and Puget Sound oountry. There are many . fine specimens of physical manhood among them, while ! their ' women are not of the easy type that ob tains among the tribes west of the Casoade mountains. VOTE FOR WITHERS. "Billy" Withers is attending to bis duties as sheriff and 1b not with the candidates on their pilgrimage around the oounty. Vote for him. The resume of the official aots of ex-Secretary of State Kincaid. as published in the Guard, shows his every act was in the interest of the taxpayers, and to prevent grafts and raids on the state treasury Lane county needs a man of his oalibre and firmness for oountv judge. The taxpayers need him at the head of the oounty court to enforce eoonomv In county ex penditures. Mother's Love Is boundless.
