MARTIN. REPUBLICAN LEGISLATION. The last Republican legislature ropealcd the not oreating the etate board of equalization and oDored no romcdy for equalizing tbe assess metal of the stale. The Multnomah oounty delega tion oonirolled the last legislature. What is tbe result? Tbe assess ment of Multnomah oounty for 1809, shows a reduction of $11,210, C93 in values from 1S93. Money on hand and assessed in 1398 amounted to 11,003,175 while in 1899 it decreased to 1527,225. Town lots fell from 120,201,534 10 14,122,00s. Improvements lrom 19,772,197 to 18,557,192. On April Cth, 1899, a little more than one month later than this asseejrr eat, the statements of the four National Banks of Portland showed deposits amounting to over five millions, and it is safe to say that the seven private banks of that city had as unnch more, or a total of ten millions, and yet only one-half million was assessed. Tbe Btale tax this year, liecaute of the great reduction in Mult nomah county, is higher than it has been for years, and tbe burden is thrown upon the country. Think of ill A reduotion ot more than eleven million dollars in one year in Multnomah county, while during the same period tbe Oreconian and all tbe Republican papers in tbe state have been crying prosperity and increased values. As a matter of faot, real estate values were higher in 1899 than in 1898. and this ereat reduction is a robbery of tbe other counties of the state. The election of the Democratic-Peoples nominees will core this defect, Will you vote to proteot yourself or tbe tax-dodger? FOR DISTRICT ATTORNEY. flLHon. S. H. Hazard,1 th9 Union nominee for district attorney, is one of the leading lawyers of Ore gon. He is a man of tbe finest legal attainments and of recognized honeBty and integrity such a man as is demanded by the taxpayers now that office of district attorney has been rendered more than ever responsible by the abolishing of the grand lury system. The MarBh field News, published in Mr, Hazard's home county, Buys of him, "Hon. S. H. Hazard, for distriot attoroey, is the strongest noiuina tion tbe Democrats could have made for that office, and one whiob meets with hearty approval in this seotion. Mr. Hazard is well known throughout tbe entire distriot; his honesty and integrity are above question, and bis vast legal knowl edge, coupled with his experience, qualify him in every respect for such an important position. He will receive votes from mewtiera of all parties in this portion of the district, and will undoubtedly receive cordial support from other counties." Tbe Myrtle Point Enterprise, a Republican newspaper, says: "Hon. S. II. Hazard, of Empire City, waB nominated by the Demo oratio-PopuliBt convention at Port land for prosecuting attorney of the 2nd judicial distriot. Mr. Hazard is one of the ablest lawyers in Southern Uregon, and was formerly proseouting attorney for this district." Mr. Hazard has twice before filled the office of district attorney. and la familiar with the duties of the position. His election at this time would be an act of wisdom on part of the voters of the 2nd judi cial distriot. GOLD VALUES.
