your vicinity, to be devoted to the re-

Kickenlng reports of suffering aud
death come by every mull. One writt's,
many have asked me why the govern
ment does not prevent the famine. If
the government could control the
weather then It could prevent the fa
mine. The Indian government is
doing all in its power. I cannot too
highly praise the work of the govern
menl officials, many of them work al
most night and day to save the people.
But the government caunot meet no
awful a crisis as the present.
Not only have the harvests failed
but in vast areas there Is a water fa
mine. Last August, the people were
buying drinking water at a high price.
Three-fourths of the cattle have died
from hunger aud thirst.
No one oan desoi ibe the horrors of
the famine. I have, visited villages
and bave seen the people dying In their
mud huts, in the streets and by the
roadside. Parents desert their children
when they can no longeroare for them.

Died. Geo R Redford, of Zlon, Or.,
died at his borne last night, of appen
dicitis, aged 28 years, 1 month aud 7
days. He was born at Cottage Grove,
Oregon, aud lived most of his life In
this 'county. Mr Redford . was a
successful farmer and rancher. He
leaves a wife aud two children. Tbe
funeral will be held May 10, Interment

Linn county tax levy: "Last year the
levy of Linn oounty was 18 mills, an
