The Register has made an Im portant disoovery and proceeds to tako the public into its oonddenoe In the following manner: "Voters should not lose sight of the faot that the prime object of the Citizen's party movement in Lane county is to secure re-election of W. W. Withers for sheriff and that the ohief instigator of the soheme is tbe evening Guard. Fusion for revenue only is its motto, and the hue and ory raised along other lines is meant to divert attention from tbe real issue the sheriff." Ho, according to the Register, tbe men who nominated the Lane Ciunty Citizen's Uoket, Silver Re publicans, Democrats and Populists, who Qave Bryan 377 plurality In L,ne county in November 1896, did not know what they were doing when they nominated a county ticket on the seventh day ot April. AN IMPROPER ANNOUNCE MENT. The Oregon Weekly is a newf paper the publication of which is authorized by the regents of the University of Oregon. Any politi cal matter or announcement in such a journal iB manilestly im proper. Tbe University of Oregon bas never been drawo into politics, nor should it be. From this point of view the editors should not have allowed the publication of a notice in the issue of May 14, eiizned by tbe president of the "Varsity Repub lican Club," calling the Attention of members of the olub to the faot that thete can be no registration for tbe June or November elections after May 15. AFTER FORTY-FOUR YEARS. SurvlvorB of the first Republican national convention are .to be the guests of the national republican convention in Philadelphia next month. Only fifteen survive of all those who assembled in Pitts burg, Penn, on June .18, 1856, to ennunoiate the new principles and to bring into existence a new party. Of these only one -jontinuea a prominent figure in politics. He U RripreHeulative 'ialusha A. Grow, who was the youngest member of tbe lower house when he first en tered it, and who is now its oldest member. The guests of the national com mittee will be given prominent seats on tbe platform.
