Republican Campaign Starts Off Rather Tamely. NOT OVER ISO PSIitST. For the past two weeks It has ten advertised freely that Hon CW Fulton, of Astoria, would open the republican campaign at the court bouse In this olty last evening. During tbe day posters were scattered over tbe city and seme of tbe leaders were out asking "Bob," "Jim," "Torn," etc, to be Bure and be out. All the candidates for office bad also been summoned from near and far to help swell the mighty crowd. At about 1:30, Dr Kuykendall, tbe Boss of tbe U O Pin Lane county, arose and after stroking bis beard and grinning, made quite a talk, among other things predicting victory In Lane county and the re-election of MoKinley. This was lightly ap plauded by tbe "large" audlenoe present of not over 160 persons, coo slstlng prlol pally of officeholders, United States and county, aud their deputies, county candidates, a sprink ling of ladles, several boys (wbo were present to escape the cut few law), a.id probably IS or 20 private citizens. Charles W. Fulton then arose and coldly proceeded to deliver tbe opening speech to the frost-like crowd assembled. He was strongly In favor of a gold standard (notwithstanding having delivered hundreds of speeches In favor of gold and silver), was In favor of taxing tbe poor people of Porto Rico 15 per cent, and was an expansionist. In fact, he was In favor of everything and anything done by the McKInley administration. He said It was a long toboggan slide from Llnooln to Bryan, but forgot to say It was a much larger one from the Fulton of 1890 and 1900; nor did be read any editorials from the Oregonian burning him up for his aotions at tbe Astoria congressional convention two years ago In trying to defeat tbe gold standard. After about two hours of this kind of talk, the small orowd adjourned with out cheer, and silently departed for tbelr respective homes. Mr. Fulton, the man who used to draw large audlenoea when be talked honestly for gold and silver, left on the S o'clock train, glad to get out of town before It froze harder.
