Mr. Robin ton was a favorite stuuip speaker nlwut the period of 1840. Ho wa3 Vulg uid had tlic nnibitlon to represent ills district in concress. In 1S12 he received the Whig noml nation for this position. It was a bad year for Whig candidates, as tho Lib erty party had then begun to present nominees against it. A majority was at that time required to elect, and there was no choice at the regular elec tion. Tho Whig party, always timid, feared Mr. Robinson could not bo elect ed on further trial and induced him to withdraw from the contest that It might present a candidate moro ac ceptable to the antlslavery men. This was a severe disappointment to Mr. Robinson. He became disgusted with the Whigs and bitter toward the anti slavery advocates. A few years later, after General Ca leb Cushlng hnd been in tho Mexican war, he was nominated by the Demo crats as their candidate for governor of Massachusetts, upon which Mr. Rob inson wrote a letter declaring he should leave the Whig party and support Gen eral Cushlng. This induced Lowell's poem. Governor Briggs was then the Whig candidate for governor, and Low ell had two refrains to his verses. The first read: So John p. Robinson, he Bars he shan't vote for Governor D. And the second: So John p. Robinson, he Says he shsll vote tor General a Boston Herald. STAGE KISSES ARE GENUINE. The Public Demands Realism Eves In Statre Lovemaktnir, "Embraces and kisses are rehearsed with the extreniest care," writes Frank lin Fyles of "The Rehearsal of a Play" In Tho Ladles' Home Journal. "They must have an Impulsive manner. They must look sufficiently fervid. It is a curious sight that of two players who are to express the ardent love which Shakespenre has written for his 'Uo meo and Juliet,' but who at rehearsal, In modern clothes and no accessories of glamour, practice a kiss as mechanical ly and unfeelingly as though It were, as It Is then, utterly devoid of senti ment. There must be uo hesitation or clumsiness. Horaco is not permitted to decide whether to throw both arms around his swecthenrt or only oue or which, nor niny Juliet bo shy or for ward, yielding or resisting, as she chooses. The director will place their arms for them if ttiey do not them selves make a picturesque exhibit of tenderness. "And tho kiss? Shall it be delivered by the wooer on tho lips of tho won or on tho brow or cheek? That ques tion is considered and settled. Aro kisses on the stage genulue? Well, not at rehearsals, except, maybe, once or twice, in order to show the effect fully. Au actress would resent a real kiss at a rehearsal except when necessary, h'or the satisfaction of nntural curiosi ty on that point It niny bo told right here that most of the kisses In the pub lie performances of plays aro actual kisses." Where Tlarers Pear Men. A cheerful place Is Soraponjee, in In dia. The rainfall there often is as great in one nftcrnoon In tho rainy season ns It is in Now York state In a whole year, and tigers and leopards are as plentiful as dogs are on New York's cast side. On account of tho tremendous dampness tho cattlo have to be driven to tho top of tho hills, so that tlicy shall not get their feet too wet, and the tigers and leopards climb to these high altitudes also, because they arc Imbued with the kindly desire to save those cattlo from pneumonia and other ills by eating them carefully and with due enjoyment. As there aro uo forests on tho hills tho tigers prowl about all night in the open, lylug concealed during the day in the limestone caves, the coal pits and between the crevices of the rocks. Tho residents come upon them In all manner of odd nooks and comers so unexpectedly that the beasts aro as much alarmed as themselves and usu ally scamper off In one direction, their disturbers flying In tho opposite one. No one stirs out at nighttime without a powerful lantern or torch, for, as a rule, wild beasts will not come near a light, though this rule does not hold good in all cases. New York nernld. Ilenlth the Mitlnsprlnar of Snocraa. Tho chief essential of success for a young man Is what the vast majority of young men think about tho least that Is, good health and a sound con stitution. That Is the first thing; noth ing precedes it. In the battle for suc cess that should bo n young man's first thought not his abilities nor hla work, but his health. That is the basis, tho cornerstone, of all. Abilities cannot bring health, but health may and gen erally docs develop ability. Ladles' Home Journal. llloKlcal.
