J The State Prohibition convention nominated ticket at TortUnd Tuesday. Among other resolu tionR were pMsed condemning the Democratic party for Its eilence on the liquor queatlon, and the Re publican party tot open eurrender to the liquor power aa teen In the protection given liquor Intereata In Cuba, Porto Rico and the Philip pi nee. Here are eome interesting extraoU from the prooeedlnge: I. II. Amos explained the tup plementary resolution! when the reading had been repeated. Ue poke o( McKinley fluctuating be tween the proprietor of a brewery and the pastor of a church. "Mo Klnley is an exquisite oompoeite type of the politician. Take the brewer and the preaoher and throw a light through them and you have MoKlnley." Kev. 0. E. Cline took the floor and said that some ProbibltionltU thought they had a monopoly on temperance. He said thai many Republicans who would vote for prohibition would refuse to do so on hearing such badinage of epi thets. The clergyman made an elaborate defense of the Republi can party, declaring that it had done more for prohibition than any other, and more to the same effect. Mr. Baker, a state lecturer of the Prohibition party, followed Rev. Cline and for 15 minutes poured in sarcasm and irony, and refuted the statements of the minister with facts and figures. Rev. Cline bad said that Republicans gave Iowa the prohibition law. . This Baker denied and declared that when tbe Republicans could have carried anything in tbe legislature tbey wanted, the prohibition l.w was shy one vote and it was a drunken Democrat wbo voted for tbe meas ure and tbe bill became a law. After ages of neglect St. Patrick's traditional grave has a stone to mark the spot. The stone is a rough, weather-beaten bowlder of granite, weighing about seven tuns, Upon the npper surface of this bowlder is carved an Irish cross, faithfully reproduced from one cut on an equally rough, unhewn stone found on tbe Island ot InlBclothran, one of tbe islands of Lough' Rea, where St. Dab-mid founded his famous ecclesiastical settlement about the middle of tbe sixth cen tury. Under the oroes the name "Patrio" Is out in Irish cburaoters, oopied from tbe earliest known Celtio manuscripts. This bi triple treatment is considered to be tbe nearest approach to the form of a monument which would have been constructed about the year 469, the supposed date of the 'saint's death. ''Lions led by aaaes" is the way a London paper bitterly refers to tbe army and Uritieh neueralnbip in South Africa. But tbe wild Doers are more ferocious and dan gerous than the lion tribe. Great Britain has found out that she has foemen who are oapable of meeting her choicest soldiery. It is a very marked change from late British wars where half naked natives. armed with primitive weapons, were soauerea to tne winds by tbe bail of bullets. The president of a Porto Rico to- baooo company states that the fifteen per cent tariff shuts their tobacco out of the United States, A fine way to treat the produoerB of our latest aoquired territory I It is an in tne interest ot tbe sugar and tobaooo trusts. The Lane county Citizens tioket is pledged to reform and eoonomloal administration of county affairs, Tbe good oharaoter and business qualifications of the nominees are iin earnest that the pledgee have nit been made to be broken. A Salem bioyolist loet his head and balance at the wrong time the other oay and, in consequence, ploked hi nnelf up from the bottom of a fifteen fool btnk along which the bioyole path ran. An exchange declares that the president has become so expert that hecau ohnnge hie,- mind in lull view of his audience without being detected. It is aaid Dewey hat deoided , to withdraw his name from the list of candidates. His wile must be a woman of a very changeable mind. Two Texas negroes when sen tenoed to death for murder declined a Bible, but asked for a deck of cards. BURDENED WOMEN. W look In amazement at the burdens some women carry opoo their heads.
