The following letter from Dr Earl G Korn, of Daytnn, Ohio,
Is self-explanatory. Mr Korn was In Eugene about two months
ago looking Into tbe matter, and remained bere about 12 days,
Inspecting sites, and studying tbe soil regarding Its adaptation to
sugar beet raising: .

Dear Sir: I herewith rvoommend your locality as well
adapted for tbe cultivation of tbe sugar beet and tbe ereotioi of a
sugar factory.
Tbe sugar company, wbloh Soils Cohen, esq, represents, asks
a subscription of 6000 acre ot Und to be cultivated, surrouudlng
Eugene; the factory s'te free ot charge, and a bonus 10 the extent
of (100,000. Tbe erection of such factory alone costs 1700.000, and
itsaniiu.il transaction amounts to about $800,000, wbere marly
$800 000 or more will be distributed direct to your farmers, and
nearly $100,000 will no direct lo laboring men iu tbe city, say
nothing of the amount of other transactions done through suob
company. "
The ereotioo of a beet sugar factory means an opening and an
establishing of a home market for your surrounding farming
community, and a forerunner of various other agricultural Indus
tries, by whloh the farmer will realize large returne, and tbe
merchants directly profited thereby.
Should you and your city be sufficiently interested to secure
thla plant, kindly notify D Soils Cohen, saq. and at tbe same
time, I would ark to be favored with your decision, so as to put
me In a position to help you as much as I can, as I am person
ally very muob p leaned with your city, and should like to locate
lu your midst.

To secute this plant would be more advantage to Lane county
than the Siuslaw railroad, for which 1100,000 was raised several
years ago. LaGrande raised a bonus of (200,000 forasugar faotory
there, smaller than this one as contemplated, and were glad of
their privilege. Since tbe faotory has been erected sod placed In
operation the people of tbat section unhesitatingly state that It is
tbe largest and best thing to come to tbat entire portion of
oountry.
This faotory in contemplation will undoubtedly be erected
some place lo tbe Willamette valley, and It la flittering to Eugene
to know this place is preferred to all others. This I an oppor
tunity where Lane oounty has a ubanoe to stand out pre-eminent
and progressive lo advance of tbe entire valley, and it should not
be uegleoted. Every business man in Eugene should urge tbat
tbe old Board of Trade be revived, and work with similar boards
t Cottage Grove, Junc'.son, Florence and other county towns to
build up Lane county, secure Hits factory and make wealth
producers out of tbe thousands of acres of rich lands which now
bring In only Iddlfferent returne.
