A special to the Journal ami Advertiser from Washington says: The statement that fc.ngla'id had apologised for the open ing of Consul Maoruiu'a mail In Pretoria was made t.y Secretary Hay to Representative Berry, of Kentucky. one of I he democratic members of the House foreign atlslrs committee. Rep resentative Berry called at the Btaw Dcpartmeut today to talk over the charges made by Maerum, audit was during this Interview that Secretary nay made toe confession. "I Baw Secretary Hay today," said Representative Berry in talking ot the proposed hearing, "aud he said that the whole grouudworkof MrMaorum's ohaiges rested upon the fact that three letters had been opened by British officials in South Africa. Secretary Hay said that England's attention had been called to this violation of international law aud that Lord Salisbury bad made an Investigation and then had seutan apology to this country. The aoology was delivered at the state department by Lord Pauneefote." Mr. Maerum nailed upon Chairman Hltt aud consulted with him as to when he would be ready to appear before the committee. As a result of the conference, the committee will be called to meet within a day or two. The whole committee will hear the testimony and the proceedings will be public iustead of the charges being heard privately by Mr. Hitt, Mr. AdamBand Mr. Berry, as was origin ally intended. Tbe name of David K. Hill, of Rlohardaon precinot, having been men tioned by the Broad-Axe as a very suitable nominee for county treasurer ou the Citizens' ticket, Mr, Hill takes occasion to justify the good opinion ot the men who know him, by ringing letter to the Broad-Axe.
