A Monster Killed In Crook

For over 12 or 14 years the people of
Silvlee creek and Sican have st tiered
the loss of a large amount of stock by
being killed by a large grizzly bear,
which has roamed the country south
ot Silver Lake, and It Is est I muted that
bruin has made an average killing of
60 bead of cattle each year.
A good many attempts nave been
made to kill this grizzly. He has
killed 6 and 6-year-old steers. As hljrb
as $250 has been offered for bis scalp.
He bas been seen many times and all
reported him to be a monster lu size,
so it was rather a delicate undertaking
to attack him. But at last the people
of that vicinity determining to have
his scalp, seut over for W. '1'. Vande
vert, who lives on the Desc'iUles, and
he went over aud took his hear dogs
aud a determined crowd started for
bruin'sscene of operation. On Friday
of la t week his track was discovered,
and ou Sunday afternoon be was
trailed to bis den in the upper end of
Thompson valley, about 10 miles south
of Silver Lake.
-The party consisted of W. T. Van de-
vert, Jiff Howard, George and Earl
Small, Creed Conn, and Billy Ball.
They weut into the first den, which
was 8x10 and Ave feet high. A small
bole led from this Into another deu iu
which the bear was located. The dogs
made It too bot for him aud he
attempted lo come out. Billy Ball
was perched above the hole leading to
the first den and as the hear came out
he shot him In the back of the head
killing him luttantly, while the rest
of the crowd were on the outside
waiting to have a hand iu bis death
but Billy's aim was sure and brulu l..y
a corpse.
The scourge of that country lay dead
at tbelr feet and all hauds felt elated
over their success. He was a monster.
Would weigh about 1600 pmulda. His
tooi was 16 Inches Inug and Mr. C. C.
Farrel, our Informant, bad one of his
claws which measures f mr luches. Me
was as tall as a good two-year-old
atee rand no doubt was about 20 years
old.
The boys showed considerable grit

but they had lost enough stock by hiui
to Justify the hazardous undertaking
They expect Boon to inspect his den
and see what can be found.
Murderers in Jail.
G. W. Oliver received a letter this
morning from H. N. Sessions, in the
employ of the Alaska Mtearushlp Com
pany at Skagway, which stated that
the Indians who murdered Mr. aud
Mrs. Horton are In jail. He further
said that any money which Mr. and
Mrs. Hnrlon might have had with
them was evidently taken by the
Indians and spent, hence cannot be
recovered. Mr. Sessions Bays he Is
atteuding to all matters necessary
there, and any suggestions of the
relatives here will be carried out.

o'clock and was burned to the ground.
A piano and organ and most of the
furniture, except two bedroom sets,
was saved, but everything else, It-
cluciiug all clothing, eJl up in tile
flames. The Ore originated from the
flue between the celling ol the first
story and floor ot the eecond, and but
for the fact that the pump wouia not
work the blaze would have been
extinguished with slight loss.
An alarm wastent In lo'the Eleventh
street hose house aud the firemen
turned out at once. The nearest
hydrant was at the corner of Eleventh
and Patterson, and after the firemen
bad laid 1000 feet of hose they could
i.ot reach the fire, and sent after
another ho.e cart, which arrived too
late to do any good.
The building, which belonged to the
W B Taylor estate, was lusured for $800
and contents $200, in the Springfield,
