"Why didn't you buy It?" I asked. "I offered old Doughty $500, and he jeered." I gasped as much as Doughty jeered $500 was an awful sum then. Five years after old Doughty died, and my husband went to a sale of his pictures and things. He came back gloomy. Ho told me that young Doughty was there, and ho could not bid against him. They made an arntngement. The artist's son was to bid up to 150. and the husband to what amount he pleased. It went for $37.W. Lately young Doughty went bankrupt ignorance of bookkeeping was his ex planation to the creditors. My husband was on the warpath again. Ho asked young Doughty to dinner and said he meant to buy the picture. The young artist raised bis paint stained hands in norror. "It's accursed! It has the evil eye! The guv'uor bought it for $250 and worshiped it. Whenever he was rich, people tempt ed him with splendid offers, and when he was poor he couldu't sell it. Ho once pawned It for $15. The beastly tiling has ruined me. I've been offered $1,000 for it when I was flush." "And refused?" "Yes. Worse luck! Last year, when I'd sold my academy picture, a rich Aus tralian came to the studio. Ho was just about to buy 'The Gem' for $3,000 'Tho Gem Is an old salon 10 footer when he saw 'The Garrido,' and said, 'Who paint ed that ugly thing?' "'Oh, It's nothing,' I replied, but be went and gazed and fell victim to the ugly Spanish troman and offered $1,002. "I was firm: he got angry and Btalkcd out of the place. 'Tho Gem' will be in the sale; but don't buy The Garrido.' It'll bring bad luck." My husband went to the sale and brought back the picture In a cab. He paid only $35. I looked with great curiosity at the work of art, undoubtedly a superb piece of painting. It represented a young Spanish woman, full face, with a pas sionate, scowling countenance, eyes that followed you about the room, and black hair which somehow Btood out against a black ground. She was an ugly woman and yet fascinating. We hung the picture over tho mantel plcco in the dining room and raved about It during dinner, and enmo back a dozen times after dinner to gaze at It. The husband even stopped tying trout casts to visit "the Spanish womnn." "Luck!" ho said. "Hang luck!" And he stuck a peacock feather In tho frame. It may have been mere coincidence, but there eamc unexpectedly a slump in the husband's work, he got "broken" in tho first Thames trout he ever hooked, a plato of soup was spilled over my best now frock, the moths got into my furs, the parlormaid caught the measles and the dog distemper. All these trifles wcro within a month, but wo wcro resolute, placid and philosophic. A friend, hearing us talk, and, ad miring the picture, offered us $250. Wo jeered. Ho left for Jorlcho. One night I heard a strango noise in the flat. I did not awnken tho husband; ho has theories about not attacking bur glars, but Is very hotheaded. I crept down to tho dining room. There was a noise inside. I burst open the door, say ing all In a breath: "You'd better go quickly and leave everything. I've rung tho call for police, boy messenger, cab, doctor and fire escape. You've just time to get awny." A cat, a mere, harmless cat, bolted past me. I went to close the window. Tho blind was up and the moon streamed in. I chanced to look at tho Spanish wo man; she was looking at me, staring, glaring. I gasped, then walked bravely toward her a step or two. The eyes were opened wider than usual and thero was a fierce light in them. My mouth grew dry; I tried to scream; my tongue merely clattered. In a mo ment all the ghost stories I had ever read passed through my mind. A subdued storm of words rushed from the thick lips, and teeth gleamed within them. The language was foreign; the voice was like that of Bernhardt when she curses In a whisper. The head ad vanced, fury In the face, mad glare In the eyes. The frame became a kind of black mist. Nearer, nearer; I could feel her breath, I thanked God Bilently that she had no arms, and put up my trembling hands to keep her off. Suddenly strength came to my legs, t rushed across the room, stumbled over a chair and fell. The head turned. I could see coarse, black curls on the nape of Its neck as It turned. Closer It came, closer, but slowly. Only a foot or two separated the face from mine, and I was paralyzed. Oloscr--only an inch off, when all at once my muscles awoke, and I fled from the room, banging the door. I said nothing at breakfast to my hus band about the matter; he Is very sym pathetic, but somowhat skeptical and quizzical. At 11 a. m. the housemaid and I took down the picture at least I looked on and she took It down. There seemed nothing abnormal about It. Then we put It Into a cab. The dealer refused to give more than $25 for it. Hitherto he and I have never had a euarrel. I snoDose that such a garden of Eden state of affairs could not last forever. Sketch. A Good Plr. We have been introduced to all, or nearly all, the characters; we have learned their names and relations to each other; we have seen something or tne motives mai underlie their actions, and we see that tholr actions have led to a most Interest ing point In the story- We arc eager to learn more; we want to see what is to become of the people. Will they get out of their troubles? Will the lovers bo united, the good rewsrded and the wick ed pnnished as they deserve? The junior partner of the firm swore out a warrant for the arrest of the sen ior partner on tho ground that be was selling goods below cost and that the firm waa constantly losing money thereby. The case came up In court, and the counsel for the senior partner asked for a postponement In order to nave moro time to prepare bis case.
