So wns the tiring. So were transport mules, Chinese stretcher coolies, advancing troops and the poor bleeding wretches who were being put Into the am bulances. So was all the available wa ter. So were the little knot of corre spondents who drummed their heels on the sides of a stack of biscuit boxes on tlio side of the railway embankment aud anathematized the war, editors In general aud the press censor )u partic ular. But the very hottest thing of all was Pousonby. And Tousonby, the usually calm aud urbane Tonsonliy, thu well tried representative of The Daily Gadlly, was now swearing like it trooper, or, for the matter of that, like a thousand troopers. Had lie not lost his pony and smashed Ills camera! Had not a staff olllcer ordered him, "Fifteen paces behind' the staff if you please, gentlemen V" And had he not fallen headlong Into a buffalo wallow, thereby befouling his usually ueat nt tire and twistiug his aukleV Around us was tiothing but smoke and dust through which the midday suu glowed In a crimson ball. A few hundred yards to tile northward on ei ther side of the Hue of railroad lay o long line of blue and brown clad Im munity, from which came a rattling Bound as though millions of crackers were being ignited in one continuous stream. Then, cutting the dust laden air with their sobbing screams, tho bul lets of the foe came Hying overhead, occasionally alighting on the brown suu baked ground with dull thuds or clanging loudiy on the irou roof of the station in whose rear we were, dust begrimed and smoke stained, taking shelter. As Agden of the San Kranclsco Screamer remarked, "While wo aro waiting here we might as well Investigate the hard tack anyhow." To this proposition P assented. A big stone aud a jnckknlfo soon had a case opened and our teeth busy, and when I unearthed a tin of sardines from my hip pocket even Ponsouby forgot to swear further. While thus engaged the firing ceased, there were a couple of bugle calls, a scries of "yells" from the American troops as they rose from their rlco ridge shelters and dashed forward in pursuit of the lleelng foe. Speedily wo were follow ing in their wake, pausing only now or then to look at n wounded mail be ing borne rearward on a stretcher. The advance lino Is soon overtaken. They have lost all sight of the tleet footed Filipinos and are now resting and iiwalting a well earned ineul. Our notes are soon Jotted down, and we proceed to Investigate n neighboring hamlet which, after firing, the Insur gents have vacated. "Looks like hot work here," said Agden, pointing to tho church, from which a shell had gently removed a corner. We acquiesce and proceed to Investi gate tho Interior. After leaving the cburel) we enter the adjacent priest's quarters aud, finding them comforta ble, proceed to camp there for the night. Your bumble servant Is Instal led as chef, while Agden and Ponsonliy sally forth to annex a chicken or any thing edible which conies handy. Hy this time n number of tho victorious troops have entered tho village and aro looking about the place, taking sections of nlpa with which to make camping "shacks," collecting firewood, seeking water, eggs, etc. Time passes. Agden returns, but no Ponsonby. It gets dark, but tho village Is ablaze with tho light of one or two blazing build ings. We ramble about, looking hero, making Inquiries there. Still no sign of our friend. Anyhow, it Is no use seeking him further toulght. lie In suro to turn up nil right So after a pleasant little meal wo "turn In." I must have been asleep some hours when something disturbed me. What on earth Is that? There, standing at the foot of my bed, Is a young native woman. Naturally 1 Rpring to my feet, awaking Agden as I do ro. Tho mysterious damsel says something In Spanish. What It means neither Ag den nor myself can comprehend, but how on earth did she get there? The insurgents have carried off nil their women with them, and how our pres ent visitor can have remained behind Is (I mystery. She Is evidently anxious about something, for see how she li beckoning. After a brief consultation as to what to do we follow tho lady through the door and Into the church. She trips along tho Moor and goes right up to the altar, seizing some drapery at Its Hide as she reaches It. There right In the thick wall of the church la a doorway i-bAvr.u out. His diagnosis was to the effect that Pon sonliy must have dlscovujf d the stair ease by some accident, had fallen dow u it In (lie ilarkuess aud Injured his head, it was impossible (o say how severe such Injury might be, and, although lie had every hope of a rapid recovery, ho would not try to give us any false im pressions. An ambulance was soon on the spot, onr wtiunded friend placed In side and we started for town, Agden having kindly volunteered to do my work In the Held liming my brief ab sence. The journey to town was speed lly accomplished, and 1 left Ponsonby in the hands of the good sisters of tlio San .luau do IMos hospital. Meanwhile I had completely forgotten the Reuorita, and It was not until 1 met Agden nt .Malolos some three days after that I gave her a thought. Then I learned Hint she had vanished as mysteriously as she had appeared. . Meanwhile the campaign went on. Weeks passed. The insurgents were day by day being driven back. Pon sonby had got out or the hospital and was recuperating in town, and as the rainy season was In full swing and nothing of Importance wns taking place in the country Agdeu and my self were also "resting." We were one evening sitting on the hotel veran da when Ponsonby walked up. After a few words of greeting he said: "Well, boys, I'm sorry to leave you, but am oil' tomorrow.
