Four weeks ago today August Fisch er, a well-known farmer residing south of Eugene, started out from bis resi dence ostensibly lor the purpose of bunting. He carried a gun and a number of cartridges. Falling to re turn fear were eutertained that Mr. Fischer bad made way with himself. Searching parties went out and hunted industriously over the foothills a num ber of different limes, but failed to And any trace ot the missing man. Word was sent tn friends up the McKenzie and In the Bohemia district whom be might have visited, but be could not be found nor heard from. A search lug party of over one hundred men from Eugene then went out and spent the day in going over bills again, but this rearch ended aa did the others without results. During the past week Mr. FlscberV dogs had been going out over the bills, and in response to a request from Mrs Fischer another party went out thin morning to make a further search. Tills party .was composed of John Blau'nn, W. B. Blanton, Isaac Blan ton, Wm. Blanton, Newton Blanton, Wm. Blanton, jr., J. B. MoMurry, Irving Hlgglns and Jake Parks. About 10 o'clock this morning on the south eastern aide of Bpenoer'a bntte about tbree and one-half miles from Fischer's home the body was found. It was ly ing ou one side in a slightly cramped position with hi gun across one arm. From a hasty examination made tiy the searchers It was evident that Fisch er waa shot through the lower part of the obln, the ball coming out at the top ot the head about the center, tear ing a large bole. His hat had been blown Into the tree above him. Tbe body waa In good condition, being but slightly decomposed. Wm. Blanton came to town and notified Coroner W, L. Cheshire wno went nut early this afternoon, accompanied by Un dertaker Kays. Tbe coroner wilt Im mediately summon a Jury on his ar rival and hold an examination. The former searching parties bad lieen within probably 60 feet of where the body waa found, and It la simply by a stiange oircumstanoe that they failed In tbelr work. The font of tbe hills where the body waa found la very rough ground, with rocks and thlok underbrush. At this time It Is too early to state whether the death of Mr. Fischer was due to an accident or a premeditated act on his part. Probably tbe latter. To the family of tbe deceased a well as to his many friend. It I a relief that at lait something Is known definitely the manner or cause of his death, A the daya went by without Hading any trace of tbe man, it was perfectly natural that various con jectures should be made, but by the flndlug of the body all Is explained bo far as that la onnoerned. At the be ginning of tbe war of the rebellion, a -cording to some of the early pioneers, this cannon was purchased by private subscription to be used principally for tbe purpose of Uiing salutes, and giv ing other demonstrations Incident to thuee stirring lime. It appear that there were two factious Interested in tbe firing piece, and that each faction wanted to use the gun at the same time. The matter provoked consider able ill feeling aud one day in 1804 the people discovered that the gun had en tirely dh appeared. In fact nothing WuS beard of it for years, and has been all bu I forgot te i. Mr. Carman found tbe gun lying near tbe yard of Mr. Debrlck wborealdea at tbe font of tbe Gillespie butte, north of this city, and brought It lo this city yesterday, keeping it for tbe present at his home in the eastern partof theolty. Togo back. to early history connected with this cannon, it bad been spirited away from this city ana taken to the highest point of the Gillespie butte and there carelully hidden. About two years ago some boys found the gun and rolled it down the hill, where it tore down a section of Mr. Debrlck'a fence. It was rolled out of tbe way and has since laid there. The cannon Is old style, has some wood parts, is heavily wrapped with rope, and escased in Iron. A cartridge is still In the gun, so that after many years It Is still ready for duty. Owing to the early history connected with this cannon It should be secured by the Native Sons, tbe county, or the people generally and carefully preserved a. a worthy rello of pioneer days.
