cubinage, was arrosted last night at
the home of his parents at Albany.
Sheriff Withers went down this morn
ing to get Patterson and took blm to
Cottage Grove this afternoon. Patter
son strongly asserts that he Is lnnoco.it,
and that If the girl was assaulted be
was not Instrumental lu the matter.
District Attorney Geo. M. Brown, who
was returning from Balem where be
appeared before the supreme oourt,
stopped off at Cottage Grove this after
noon and will assist his deputy, L. T.
Harris, In the examination. L. Bllyeu,

inary examination of B. F. Harvey,
heard yesterday, appears In adlepatoh

of B. F. Harvey, tbe brakeman who
was placed undor $600 bonds last Sat
urday npon tho charge of rape upon
the perron of Miss Winnie Thorn.
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney L. T.
Harris appeared for the state and
Attorneys A. 0. Woodoook and J. B,
Medley for the dvfonse. Miss Thorn,
the victim of the dastardly crime, was
the first witness on the stand. Bhe is
a modest looking girl of less than 18
years, and from tbe first created
favorable Impression, telling her story
In a straightforward manner. Only
once or twice during the recital of her
pitiful story did she hesitate, and then
apparently from an aversion to alluding
to the dlsgraooful affair. The defonse
failed to break down her ovideooe on
oroas-examluatlou, and when abe was
asked why she did not resist and ory
ror help, stated that Patterson and
Harvey, who she alleged forced ber
upon the car, threatened her life.
The examination of the witnesses
took up the greater part of the day,

sides, aud oonsumed about two hours,
the oaso resting with Judge Vaughan
about 6 o'clock, who aunounoed he
would hold the defendaut to appear
before the circuit Judge of Lane county
at the next term of court, In the sum

This morning about 1:15 o'clock Po
lioemao Croner, while In tbe rear of
Peters' store, saw a man's bead Just
fur a moment, watching him from the
woodshed In the rear of F. E. Dunn's
store. He gave chose aud two men
ran to tbe rear of Link's shoe store,
where tbe officer arrested them and
plaoed them in the city Jail. They
claimed to be tramps and were looking
for a place to sleep,
This forenoon Marshal Utiles made
an examination of tbe "premises in tbe
rear of Mr. Dunn's and Mr. Link's
stores. In tbe rear of the latter be
found a crooked wire instrument on
tbe ground, made to open locks, and
with this they had unlocked tbe rear
door of Mr. Dunn's store, but it was
bolted, therefore tbey bad not gained
an entrance to tbe building when ap
prehended ; a few feet away be also
found a murderous looking 44 oalibre
Colt's pistol, fully loaded. He then
went to tbe Jail and made a thorough
examination of the Interior. He found
in a newly purchased mattress two 10-
inoh files neatly secreted. They also had
on their persons when arrested a large
pruning knife and a razor.
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Harris,
who is at Cottage Grove, was tele
phoned to concerning tbe oase and he
said it would probably be Thursday
before be could return here. Therefore
the men were taken before Recorder

When Mr. Harris returns, a charge of
attempted burglary will probably be
booked against thein.
These men are evidently old hands

not have thrown away their gun,
Burglailes have been prevalent down

vigilant oflloer prevented them from
burglarising the store,
Tbe two men were known to have
two revolvers and only one was found.

tion of 1809 taxes at 23.6 mills, appor
tioned as follows;

This year a 20 per cent reduction was
made In real estate and Improvement
assessment, which makes the higher
rate of the levy thiB year practically a
lower rate than last year. In other
words, based on the same valuation
the 23.6 mills of this year amounts to
18.8 mills on tbe basis of the 20 mills
levied last year. But In this the coun
ly Is tbe gainer In income $6,701 39,
while the schools lose $8,000.97 or
approximately $1 per scholar, and
Lane county pays to the state $2,202 57
less than last year. Of the 1698 levy, S
mills for oounty and 1.3 mills for oourt
bouse, a total of 9.8 mills brought to
Lane county f 58,677. 79, while for the
1899 levy, 8 mills for county, 2 for
court housa and 2.2 for roads and rock
crushers will bring In $65,379.18.
While taxpayeis on real estate pay
$1.60 less on each $1000 of taxable
property tbe county will have an
added income of nearly $7000, which
It may not need, and the schools lose
$6000 which they can illy effort to do
without.
