Oregon Timberman: "The Paoifio Bznort Lumber Company of Portland, which has floated more big oar goes of lumber than any other oompany in existence, is still extending its business. It has under oharter for Portland loading at the present time two steamships, the oombined cargo or whion will total 6.500,000 feet, One of these steamships is the mammoth turret steamship Guernsey, which has just left Portland with a 3,500,000 feet cargo aboard. The other is the turret steamship Klmbranoh, whiob is coming to Portland to load after discharging a tt,UUU,UUU toot cargo of lumber shipped from the Sound by the Paoifio Export Company to a Japan port. The immense carrying capaoity of these tramp steamers, tint do business wherever it oan be found, will be appreciated when it is ooo sidered that a log scaling 1000 leet is a large oue, about three feet in diameter wbon sixteen feet long. The large steamer mentioned above would carry the produots of thirty five hundred suoh logs. The Eugene mill, with a capacity of probably twenty thousand feet a day when working long hours, would require bout a years time to fill suoh an order. The Sumpter mining distrlot in Baker county is undoubtedly very rioh In gold, but the imagination is somewhat staggered by a dispatch VfDeo20. Years, f ll HER LIFE FOR HIS. From the door of a cabin'ln Terrapin mountain issued a Iqbs. "I wonder ef Cap'n Earleis here?" she n-mtcrt-d, as she plnced the pall she had been carrying- on the ground. Shading her bine eyes from the rays -of the now rlM-u sun she peered into the leafy dark ness of the furreaeuing chasm. "He said te'd come ef he could-git away from his men. The cap'n he'd better be pullin up sticks and gittin out o' here, 'cause dnd's mad an Jim Ueflln's mad too. An when them air two git mad at a rewnue man thar s sho to be trouble. Jim Ileilin un dad hed jus' as well put 't in their pipes an smoke it, too, fcr the cap'n ain't goin to git till he ketches 'em. Dad's done got the revenue men down on him fer makln moonshine. Thnr's goln to be trouble ronn Terrapin enounting ylt. 'ialklug thus to herself, she started. blushed and turned quickly, as she heard a low whistle. A-tall, fineslooking young fellow stepped out Into' the clearing around the spring. "Good morning, Mary, you are looking as fresh and as pretty as that little mountain nink. What newsfl" The girl blushed to her ears as she faced him, but looked himsteadlly In the eves. "Thar's goln to be trouble roun here tonight, cap'n, an dad swore last night he was goin to kill you fer-smashin bis still on t'other mounting. You better keep both eyes open."- "Is that all?" he 'asked, as he came closer to her. "Ain't that enomrh?" "No, Mary. I am not afraid of his threats. I fear-your pretty face and blue eyes more than I do moonshiners. "Look here, Cap'n Earle, I ain't nothin but n poor mounting gal, an I can t rend or write. Keep thorn ere sugary things fer V.o valley gals. Bay 'em to them as will take 'em." As Mary said this she turned away. A tremor was In her heart, a sob In her voice. She bnd grown to lovo the hand some officer. She loved him with the wild and impassioned fervor of a nature un taught, untrained. And he, had be con ceived such a thing, would have smiled at her simplicity. She turned to him again. "Oh, cap'n, you must go down to the valley tonight. Jim lieflin an dad'll kill you. They air hot 'cause you loan the still an Bmashed it." "Well, Mary, I can't run from them. That would be cowardly. Besides, i have this protector," slapping his Win chester rifle. "That is good for 16 men." "PromiBO me, cap'n, ef you stay on the mounting yon won't leave Silas Coombs' cabin. Promise mel Promise met" Her voice pleaded with him by her accents alone. "I'll be careful, Mary." And turning, be walked rapidly away. Beaching the entrance to the gorge, he waved bis hat to her as he disappeared In the thick un dergrowth. Mary Mason sighed and re turned to the cabin. That night, while getting supper in the little shed in the rear of the cabin, she heard her father and Jim Hcflln talking in low tones in the main room. Creep ing near the door, she listened to their plan for waylaying and murdering Jack Earle. With a heart thumping with ter ror she served their supper In silence. As soon as supper was finished the two men shouldered their guns, got on horses and started away. It was a dark and star lesB night. The wind moaned and sobbed through the echoing pines. "u Lord, uod Almighty, I never said a prayer but this oncat. 6 Lord, give me grit 'nough to git to him before dad an Jim does." Out of the cabin she rushed, dashing madly over the rocks that formed the bed of a winter torrent, but now gone dry. .With every muscle in her supple young body strained to the utmost, her breath coming with painful sobs, her eyos staring into the pitchy darkness. her lips breathing fervid appeals to heaven to allow her to reach Silas Coombs' beforo the men did, on, on she ran, clutching in her haste even the briers that- cruelly tore her hands aud face aa sho clambered up tbo mountain. Faster, faster she ran, now falling hendloni. but only to arise asnln and rush on. At last she gained the plateau of Terrapin, where stood the cabin of Silas Coombs. Down the declivity she dashed. As she gained the cabin, turning. bIic saw her father and Jim HcBin riding to the house as thu great, round, silvery moon appeared over the peak. "Open the door, open the door, fer Ood's sake, cap'n I Git on your horse and go, go like satan was arter yon!" &arie rusUed out Grasping her with one arm, as he saw she was faint, he turned aid faced old man Mason and Jim Ilcflin. "What do you want?" he asked. "Wo want you. cubs vou." renlled Her. lin, aa he made a dash at Earle. Earle released his grasp of Mary, and the two men clinched in u deadly struggle. Over and over they rolled on the "gallery," each striving to disengage his pistol from his belt. At last Iletlin drew his and, aiming it, would have bespattered the floor with Karle's brains hsd not Mary, with a scream of anguish, thrown herself between the pistol and Earle. But 'twas too late. The ball went crashing through the poor girl's breast. HeBIn stsrted to bis feet with an exclamation of horror, and fled madly down the mountain, fol lowed by MaBon, who had not seen tho mark of the bullet. Earle rose to his knees, and, catching tho dying girl In his arms. Sobbed as if his heart would break. strong man as he was. What can I do. what can I do. Mirv. Barling?" 'Mhar ain t but one thing, can'n." the dying girl gasped, "just let me rest my &ead on yer shoulder here, an, an," Bhe hesitated, "an, cap'n, ef you don't ndn, I'd like to havener kiss me just oncst" And with his kiss on her Una the little heroine gave up to her Maker that life sho sacrificed for Earle.
