Let no man go to Cape Nome tbihking it a holiday excursion True there are no Chilout passes to olitnb, and in summer no ioe and enow to encounter. But the heal of the weather, except for a fen ex ceptional days in July and AugUBi is trying in the extreme. ?t rain, blows and atorme almost oontin uously. The bud shine only at in tervals while the north wind has "let go"to give the south wind a ohanoe or vice versa, and neither ie very long "Retting hold" 'again. There are but four or five month in the year during wbioh any work oan be dooo. The days are long with 18 to 24 hours of daylight and a man can work as many hours as he oa,n stand up to it. The oountry iB a barren waBte so far as vegetable life 1b ojneerned. A speoies of moss growB on the tundra or level places into which the foot sinks from an inoh or two to a foot or eighteen inches according to the amount of moisture present. A kind of grass : grows on the lower Blopes of the mountains and above that all is desolation. No trees grow in that latitude, of even the most Blunted oharaoter nothing that would uuffloe to build a fire. All fuel has to be oarried there save such as has drilled in from warmer latitudes from tlio son. The sup ply of this, though Buflloient for IiibI summer, will be totally ex hausted by the returu of spring. Whoever goes there next summer should be as sure to carry a Bupply of fuel as ot lood. ANCIENT RIVER CHANNELS, Whence comes this vast supply of gold? What is its sou roe? Von Humboldt declared long before there bad been an actual discotery of gold in the northern fields that the source of the gold on this conti nent would yet be found in Alaska. Discoveries are certainly approach' ing an nnknown source of supply, as the farther north they lead the greater the quantity of it found. All up and down the Taoilio (golden) Coast, wherever placers have been found, there Hate liBt-n uncovered the bed and onannels of ancionl rivers running from north to south wih will w.irn water marks oil bed rock and salient points, showing thai water Mowed for ages from north to euulh in th-80 channels. In places they have been broken; suctions of them buried deep under vast mountains of rock. In other places lifted high upon their tops and shoulders. IIAKKIi COUNTY DKPOSITS. Running across the central part of the country in the Baker county mining district iB one of these ancient channels lifted to an average elevation of 5,000 feet above the sea. It is 300 to 400 leet wide and can be air plainly traced now in some of in course as it could have been while the ancient river flowed in its bed. The treat ex pense of getting watfr to it has prevented its being washed, though its richness has been known since the dayB of '49 to '55. The rich placers along the modern streams which drain these modern moun tains most certainly had their origin in this ancient cbaunel, and the gold has been brought down' from places where these streams have broken it. The higher up these streams toward this couree the coarser the gold, and the larger nug '.ets have been found. Probably more than fifty millions of dollars worth of gold haB been found and carried away from this single ter ritory in the last forty years. A million dollars . or more continues to be mined and carried away now every year, and single solid pieces of cold have been found there that were worth $5,000 to $10,000 each and more. Pimples Are more than a disfigurement of the akin; they are a handicap, to a young man, uiikc in iuvc anu ousiness. ine pimply face looks dissipated and both merchant and maiden look askance at the unfortunate feHow whose face is his misfortune.
