Fourth. BY ANDREW DOWNS. Not lu many years have tlio makers of Ureworks prepared so mnny novel ties as for this Fourth-. Last year they were caught unprepared. Events canio too fast for them. I!y desperate work they managed to get out a few Dewey specialties, having had two months to do the work in, but the laud and naval battles around Santiago came so close to Independence day that the fireworks of last Fourth of July suggested noth ing of our great victories. Hut this year the pyrotechnists arc right up to date, realizing that the patriotic American citizen demands new and appropriate designs In fire works, the manufacturers have mado a special effort to furnish the supply. Of course the average citizen who takes home a few dollars' worth of fire works "Just to please the children" will stick to the old fashioned varloties, such as roman candles, sky rockets, pinwhecls and colored Ore. He knows how to handle those, and he dreads to experiment with the novelties. lie is afraid lie may be at the wrong end when he touches them off. The new things In fireworks are mainly for use in public exhibitions, where the pyrotechnics are in charge of an experienced man. They delight the small boy, who Is progressive by nature and likes new sensations. They also furnish a pleasing change to tho older people who can no longer go Into ecstacles over the soaring of a two ounce rocket or the sputtering of a six ball candle. One elaborate novelty Is called a Ma nila battery. It is a formidable look ing piece, something In the stylo of a mine. It needs a solid foundation. M'hen touched off, It begins with an In tensely white Illumination, .which changes to red. In the midst of tills artificial constellation sud denly appears a flery repro duction of tho American eagle. This is bound to make a big hit. Then there Is tho rocket which unfolds at a height of 1,000 feet nbovo the spectators a red, white and blue streamer, composed of floating lights which drift away Into the night until i3 they slowly fade from view. There aro also Dewey bombs, modeled after the Ml C4 i I if Itst - ,r - shells used in the United States navy; tho Schley torpedo, which will dart under water and explode Just as if It had been fired from the dishing or Winslow, and the IMis.m mine. The latter etnits smoke and flames of red, i White aud blue as a sort of prelude to th vu-iiieiuiiK repuri wiucn louows me grand oxplosiou. As tho smoke clears away you see a picture of Hobsou sink lug the Merrlmac that Is, you Imagine this is what the artist meant, for if you are charitable you will not look for flaws lu the perspective of pyrotechnic pictures. Japanese daylight fireworks have also been Imported In large quantities. These are as yet comparatively new here, but they are bound to become popular. The Japs are very quick to understand our wants and have excr tised their best cunning to meet the special requirements of this year. One of their daylight shells throws out a little wad of paper which ex pands and fills out Into what, with a little imagination, can readily be recog nized as a gigantic representation of Admiral Dewey's familiar features. The eyes set a little more obliquely than wo would like to see them, but the shoulder straps are all right, and the mustache is in the right place. Another shell explodes and releases a paper facsimile of tho Olympla. These figures are made of fine tissue paper so weighted that when left to float they are tilled out by the air Into the desired shapes. The night fireworks will still bo largely of the good old types. Set pieces upon the battle of Manila will of course be shown. Hut such pieces are expensive. Ardent patriotism Is not always supplied with abundant funds. Shells fired from mortars are, per haps, the things that will prove most popular this year. Shells are going to be unusually diverse lu design and splendid In effect. The new shells are repeaters. One favorite explodes Into a shower of red stars, then Into one of white, then into a third of bluo. The Neapolltau repeating bombshell shows as many as six different designs In the air. The Japanese bombshells explode into muous, dragons, chrysan themums, fans, rings, showers of pearls and the like. Other designs show parachutes, streamers, mammoth spreaders, comets, etc. These nro ex ceedingly curious from tho changing from one design to another In quick succession In the air. A novelty of this year, liich Is call ed the "fire king," is set off on a spin dle, at the top of a post. In revolving, It seems to beat the n'.r, as with wings of gorgeous fire. The searchlight rock et throws out, at Its explosion, a para chute carrying a cluster of brilliant white lights. As to set pieces, there is of courso no doubt about the favorites. Naval bat tles are tho things In chief demand. Terrible visions of impossible battle ships will glare out of tiie night amid perfect showers of stars, shells and rockets. Hut patriotic feeling will overlook technical defects, and these pyrotechnic battles will be one of tho grand features of the year. In spite of these novelties, the Amer ican small boy, who really owns tho day and does the main part of the celo brntlng, will confine his attention chiefly to the good old fashioned crack ers, which lie will "fire off" ono by ouo to his own deep satisfaction and with some damage to his clothes and cuticle. lie begins early In the morn ing and keeps at It with such persist ence that at night, when the old folks are sitting up to watch the rockets and set pieces, he has had his blisters dono up in flour and gone to tho peaceful land of nod, whoro they have forgotten nil about Fourth of July and have only vogue and fantastic recollections about fireworks.
