One of tho most remarkable facta to be found in tho history of eloep consist in tho utter inability to resist its onset in cases of extreme fatigue. Several re markable instances are given in which persous have continued to walk onward while sleep has overcome them, tho au tomatic centers of tho brain evidently controlling ami stimulating tho muscles when consciousness itself bad boon completely abrogated. It ia recorded that at the battle of tho Kile, amid tho roar or camion and tho fall of wreckage, some of tho overfntiga.nl boys serving the guns with powder fell asleep on tho deck. Dr. Carpenter gives another in stance of allied kind, lu the conrse of the Burmese war tho captain of a frig ate actively engaged in combat fell asleep from sheer exhaustion aud slept souudly for two hours within a yard of one of tho biggest guns, which was be ing actively worked dnring his slum bers. It is a matter of common medical knowledge that extreme exhaustion in bice of the severest pain will iudnco deep. Hero tho imperative demand of the body a demand implanted, as wo have seen, in tho constitution of cur frames asserts its influence, nnd even pain, the ordinury conqueror of repose, has in its turn to succumb. Ono of tho most extraordinajy cases in which tho oven tiling power of Bleep was ever ex emplified was that of Damiens, con demned for treason in Paris in 1757. Ho was barbarously tortured, but re marked that tho deprivation of sleep nan ueeu tho. greatest torturo of nil. It was reported that ho slept soundly even in the short intervals which elapsed be tween bis periods of torture. Among the Chinese a form of punish ment for crimes, consists in keeping the prisoner continually awake or in nrons iug him incessantly after short intor vuls of repose. After tho eighth day of such sleeplessness one criminal besought his captors to put bim. to death by any means they Gould choose or invent, so great was his piiii and torment due to tho absence of "natures soft nnrso. Persons engaged in mechanical labor, such as attending u niachino in a fac tory, havo often fallen asleep despite the plain record of pains and penalties attending snch dereliction of duty, to say nothing of the sense of personal danger which was plainly kept before their eyes. One of tho most interesting phases connected with sleep is that in which a determination, formed overnight, that wo should wako at a certain honr acts truo to tho appointed tiuio. In certain instances witli which I nui acquainted tho iden acts porfectly, in others it acts occasionally, and in other cases, again, it fails completely. The explanation of this habit depends on what ono may term a "dominant idea," or an idee fixe, ns the i'rench term it Thero is something akin in this waking notion to tho "dominant idea" with which a, hypnotist may impress his facile sub ject. If wo substitute for tho hypnotist tho individual himself, or mnybap tho idea of tho friend who has been im pressing upon him the necessity for sounding tho reveillo at a given honr in the morning, wo can discern the ra tionale of tho action with a fair degree of clearness. The dominant idea in tho shape of the necessity for awaking at a certain time is impressed on the brain and is probably transmitted to those antomatio or lower centers which rulo our me chanical acts which aro responsible for the visions of the night nnd which aro capable of carrying out, either in tho entiro absoncoof consciousness or in tho exerciso of a subconscious condition, many complex actions. Through the honrs of sleep the dominant idea re mains impressed on these lower centers. The head of tho business sleeps on while the night watclunan is awako, and so, prompt to the time or shortly beforo or after it, tho desired rosnlt is attained and tho slumbering brain is awakened to the full measure of its activity. That sleep ia rnled by tho habits of tho individual is extremely evident An instance is given in which a person who had taken passage on boaid a warship was rudely awakened by the morning gun, which startled him exceedingly. On succeeding mornings the gun woko him at first sharply and then much more quietly, until lit length ho slept on without being disturbed at all in his slumbers by tho report. It is also nota blo that when a special habit of lifo has become part nnd parcel of tho daily routino sleep is liable to bo disturbed by even the slightest appeal which or dinarily wakes the individual in tho exorcise of bis profession, whilo noises of much more griovons character fail to effect that result. The doctor wakes on the slightest agitation of his night bell, while the click of tho needle awakes the tired telegraphist when a loud noise might fail. Sir Edward Codrington was serving In tbo enrlv davs of his naval experi ences as signal lieutenant to Lord Hood at tho battle cf Toulon. Ills duty was that of watching for and interpreting the signals niado by tho lookout frig ates, and in this capacity ho remained on deck for 18 or 1(1 hours ont of the 24. Exhausted with the strain of watch ing, he went below to obtain sleep, anil reposed soundly, undisturbed by any ordinary noi.se. Vet whenever a com rade lightly whispered in his ear the word "signal" bo at once awoke, ready for duty. Tho cause of sleep is as yet a matter of scientific debate. In tho pres ent stite of onr knowledge there can be no absoloto certainty in the matter. "Tho Ape of Death," by Dr. Andrew Wilson, F. B. S. E. , in Harper's Maga rine.
